Yes, the whole surface of the bath needs to be covered in a solid layer of paint first. Otherwise there will be gaps between the paint that will distort the pattern when you pull the combs through. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be all one color, if you didn’t want it to be. As long as you have a solid layer with every drop place just inside the previous one, so there are no breaks in the surface of the paint.

So pretty. May I ask, what are you achieving with the strips of newspaper on the sides? Is making the paint more even on the edges? Thank you.

I’m pulling the paint all the way to the edge of the tray and sort of sticking it to the sides. So the entire bath is covered with a solid layer of paint. If there is any bath that is not covered at the edges it will get pulled into the pattern by the combs and leave gaps in the pattern.
