I tried felt,acrylic & cork-rubber mats,to my technics m5g with the ortodon 2m blue cartridge. The felt & especially the acrylic have to much static. The acrylic produce very clean sound but a bit bright for my taste. The best for me is the cork-rubber. Very neutral sound(a little bass-boost),better isolation & almost zero static.

It's not just about sound. Static builds up very annoyingly with felt mats, attracting all sorts of dust to your record.
@loboptlu Жыл бұрын
@@eleven9286 well got the Hudson mat and static got so extreme that it crackles when i took of the record for flipping it ,plus i feel the record not wanting to part with the mat. Sound is good when i use the antistatic brush ,but it creates a latent static that unfolds when you lift the record off, and record is so loaded that its difficult to get it into the sleeve. I did hear a very minute difference between felt and acrylic. I do have an acrylic mat on my turntable. Unfortunately it is a tad bit thick for my platter so pitch of the tonearm is not to spec, but it still sounds alright.

I use the Technics original thin slipmat. I'm not sure about its material, it's not particularly bendy but it has somewhat felty feeling. Overall I'm not able to tell sound differences between this and 6mm rubber mat with my equipment and I'm really not commited to it. Some records have pretty much static crackling when lifted off from rubber mat. The thin slipmat seems to control this behaviour better, the mat sometimes wants to cling onto record but the records mostly stay free of static.

Even listening through an iPhone speaker I could hear a difference, the acrylic mat the midrange had a lot of clarity, while the felt sounded muddy by comparison. I would be interested in a felt, vs rubber vs cork, vs acrylic turntable mat shootout. I’ve only used rubber because that’s what my turntable came with. I was told that a rubber mat holds the record the best, minimizing wow and flutter and the rubber absorbs resonant vibration the best.

Got my AT120XUSB Technica turntable yesterday - set it up, and tried "green" acrylic mat. There seems to be a slight wobble; sounds good though. I tried putting the felt down first and the acrylic on top, and used the Big Ben record stabilizer - sounds very good . My question - is that too much for the stylus that was set earlier ? I’ve been thinking about getting an acrylic “slip” mat for my turntable. What scares me is that I read somewhere that the record doesn’t “stick” to the mat. That the record will slip or spin independently on the mat. OR... that the mat itself spins independently on the platter! If this is true Who would want one?! I don’t feel like having speed issues or scratched records. What do you think? Thanks and nice vids

These acrylic mats are a terrible idea. The central label well is too deep and the diameter is too big because most if not all records have an edge lip, this would mean that the disk is riding on that lip and not touching until it reaches the spindle. Thus, there is no or little contact with the record additionally the turntable used does not have a flat surface so now the record is free floating and so is the mat. If you should use a central disk clamp or weight the record would bow..... these mats are a terrible idea, period!
@Recordology7 ай бұрын
Interesting arguments! In practice, most records are not rigid enough to prevent sagging between the edge lip to the spindle. Some records have no edge lip and some have no raised hub. The best solution for complete adaptive support would be a felt mat or a rubber one with contoured cutouts from that standpoint. However, having used all types and exclusively acrylic for the past several years - it just makes no difference whatsoever. The variances are so small. Currently I am spinning on a solid 1” frosted acrylic platter with no hub recess (which I was slightly concerned about) but it works brilliantly as well. The sound is a touch more punchy with acrylic.

@RedMilitiaX3 жыл бұрын
Technically is does make sense. It gives better platter weight, reduces resonance and static amongst other things. But you are not going to hear the difference on budget turn-tables and cartridges. I can hear a big difference on my main system which is a Rega Planar 6, but almost none in my study where i have a Rega Planar 1. Crosley is also going to pick up next to no difference. High end cartridges are more sensitive i guess and pick up more details from records. You forget that quality of sound was generally not important decades ago for most vinyl byers, they just wanted to chill out to grooves, not enjoy the sound. It´s only the last 7-8 years that vinyl sound quality has been giver serious consideration.
