No need to apply gesso for this, But the crack can happen after applying it directly, for that we have to mix fevicol in this putty so that it does not crack, after that you can apply.

It won't be as strong as a m-seal. But It will crack if we do not apply color and liquid varnish on it later. If you want to make a flat surface and make it more strong, then apply by mixing fevicol in it, then it will last a long time.
