I love that the witches are kids, it's so much more sinister and they are absolutely fantastic in the role.

The girls playing the witches are so cute! I'm finishing up high school and I'm still not that great when it comes to Shakespeare, so I applaud them for doing an amazing job at a young age.

@Elizabeth Kaleniuk Well then, I got to give you props. You certainly did better than I would have at age 9! As for looking weird, almost everyone who grew up doing theatre felt that way. I can't tell you how many times I was put in a ridiculous costume for the shows I did as a kid.

I'm seriously questioning the choice to make the witches little girls. Especially in the way this scene is staged, they aren't intimidating enough to impress Macbeth and Banquo, let alone the audience.
@StephanieStjames4884 жыл бұрын
I agree. The girls were more like precocious stage-schoolers. Putting them in cute onesies and furry slippers did nothing to enhance the production!!
@ignoreanycommentsoverayear65604 жыл бұрын
I think they should have had girls not in onesies but in witches rags, maybe with blood and dirt smeared on them? It would help making them scarier
@jonathanmelia4 жыл бұрын
It’s quite clear, if you look at other clips from this production, the director was influenced by the films of Kubrick. This is the production’s THE SHINING moment.

Throws responsibility onto Macbeth for the murder. Kids are making it up as they go along- no authority, no responsibility. It's Macbeth's intent.

I like the idea of making the witches kid like. Kids can be scary as hell like in The Shining, but something about this one was a bit off tbh. Maybe using young adult actors who look extremely young instead can execute this idea better.

An interesting dramatic choice to make the witches children. There’s a long tradition of monstrous children and child-like spirits in the supernatural and horror that make it quite apt and original. They aren’t meant to be scary, rather to convey an otherworldly impression.Some rather literal and unimaginative criticisms in the comments.

So, Shakespeare spends the first fifteen minutes of the play, through the mouths of The Bloody Sergeant, Malcolm, Duncan, and Ross, telling us what a great man Macbeth is - a great general, soldier, intellect, poet, physically and emotionally extremely strong, admired for these qualities by all. And then, in this production, he encounters three little girls and he is terrified. So we see Shakespeare, the Sergeant, Malcolm, Duncan, and Ross had all got it wrong - he's not a great man - he's just a big wuss. Thank you Ms Findlay for revealing this remarkable insight to us. Ruins the play, of course, but hey ho, you can't have everything.

Macbeth is not terrified of the Witches. He’s terrified by the INFORMATION they give him. If he is to “be king hereafter”, there’s only one option open to him that can make that happen: he is going to have to murder Duncan (and to kill one’s sovereign is one of the worst sins imaginable). As he subsequently says, “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man, That function is smothered in surmise, And nothing is but what is not.” The message terrifies him, not the messengers.

I don't think he's terrified of what the sisters tell him. He is excited - or would be if the sisters had any credibility ( obviously not the fault of these children - but rather, the director). Macbeth has thought ( fantasised) about becoming king,both on his own and with his wife, a thousand times before his encounter with the sisters. And he knows he's going to hell for what he is going to do. And he's an extremely intelligent man ( not in this production, obviously) but he goes ahead and does it anyway. And that's your tragedy And that's your great,great play. ( not in this production, obviously) .

Pretty weak attempt. Ecclestone is about a 6.5/10, though hard to tell with his limited lines in this scene. Everyone else was rubbish . And why is there a guy sitting beside a water-cooler for the whole scene?

They just do. There's an AP video where Christopher Eccleston and Niamh Cusack talk about the superstition and Eccleston explains that the entire thing is actually because theaters putting on Macbeth had typically fallen on hard times.
