for 14 what you can do is set up: 3c=b and since its asking whats 3+c in terms of b(basically means substitution if you follow my method) you try to get c by itself so you divide both sides by 3 and get c=b/3 and since you are adding three to c which is b/3 you get b/3 +3

Hey this was a very informative video and greatly appreciated. I noticed for about 6 of the problems you added values in order to solve for the equation. I was wondering how are you able to determine what types of problems you could do those with or not?
@littlev1002 Жыл бұрын
while this is a great video, you seem to take the approach of solving by basically guess and check with all your answers. While this strategy works, sometimes it would be faster to simply solve it conceptually. for example: for number 14, you know 3c=b, so you can quickly see that c = b/3 by dividing both sides by 3. all we want to do is put c + 3 in terms of b, so we can just substitute b/3 for c. we then get b/3 + 3, your answer. If you dont immediately see a way to do it conceptually, by all means plug and chug. But on the test, it will save substantial time if you can do at least some of the problems conceptually.
@BeyondTheTest Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Most of the time solving a problem algebraically will be the faster method. However, we understand that there are a lot of concepts in math and it can be hard for all students to remember how to do them all. Therefore, the purpose of this video is simply to show that there are more ways than one to approach a problem and serves to show students how to solve for situations if they get stuck. We always recommend solving algebraically first and to use this as a backup plan unless you think this approach will be faster.
@snorlax94093 жыл бұрын
For 12, it’d be quicker if you just find the slope using y intercept by x=0, so the coordinate has to be (0,8) and (2,6)
@OverclockingCowboy5 ай бұрын
The y intercept at x=0 is always your friend. Actually, he doesn’t need to solve for A. The quantity (A+1) is the slope.
@benjamincox97626 жыл бұрын
Hey man, great video! Just wondering why you don't explain the math itself. I know that this is a test taking strategy video, but sometimes I think doing the math would have actually been quicker and thus more useful as a test taking strategy.
@BeyondTheTest6 жыл бұрын
You're right! The strategies aren't the best way to approach every question. Some of our videos delve into the algebraic explanations as well. It's up to each individual student to decide how to approach the questions - we just want to give as many tools as possible.

On question 5: when I type -6^2 in my calculator I am getting -36. But when I type (-6)^2 I get positive 36. Why?
@RelmedGaming6 жыл бұрын
That is because the calculator is squaring the 6 or (6*6) without the negative in -6^2 but then adds back the negative after the fact. But when in parenthesis, (-6)^2, the calculator squares the -6 or (-6*-6).

For number 3, how -2^2= -4? Negative times a negative is a positive.
@BeyondTheTest3 жыл бұрын
-2^2 isn't the same thing as (-2)^2. (-2)^2 = (-2)(-2) = 4. -2^2 = -(2)(2), such that only the 2 gets squared. Thus, we get -4.

If you choose 2 for 'x', then slot in the 2 in place of all the 'x's in the diagram. X will be 2 and 2x will be 4. Combine that with the fact that all the triangles are congruent, and each side must be 6
