Charles S. Dutton is truly great in this. One of the best performances of Shakespeare I've ever seen. Too bad he didn't actually perform in any major Othello production as far as I know.

Cynthia Nixon is un- directable. You can see her physically and mentally resisting the directing. She tenses up, at hearing any "criticism" of all her hard work, and then does it exactly the same way she did before. Actors like her are solo performers in their own little world within the play. Her acting partner has absolutely zero to play off of on stage. He's killing himself to get her playing in the scene with him... not in the mirror. I've only had a few on my stage, thank God. They suck the life out of a director and the play.

I think this is a really bad take, to the point where I feel driven to respond to a four year old comment. I've seen a few people say stuff like this about her in this workshop, and I don't see it. In the first scene we see her, we get to see her exploring playing it in a different way. The changes are subtle, but they are present. In Much Ado, sure, the changes aren't sweeping but you can see a difference and effort from the first take. It's a workshop, not a performance, and not a rehearsal. The people there are there to learn and work on their Shakespearean acting, so we shouldn't be surprised if they don't make the leap right off. That is really important to keep in mind, and it's important to realize that someone's thinking face is just that, they are working the connection in their mind, and to me it is clear that is what is happening here. I've seen actors struggle with direction because they are having a hard time making the connection through multiple rehearsals, and not get it until tech. I have seen the kind of professional you are talking about, and maybe she has been one, but this is not an example to log as evidence.
