The dog lunged at them and with a possible rabid dog,, you can't risk it. The closer to the brain a rabid bite is,, the faster it sets in. So a bite on the arm or hand or face is a more urgent than on the foot. The virus travels only in the nervous system,, so if you get a bite on the foot,, it will take longer to travel than on the face since the brain is where it will end up. Yes it's scared, but the way it walked up, you can tell something wasn't right with it aside from being scared. That's one of the hallmark symptoms when symptoms first start. I've seen rabid animals on my property and this looked like what happens.
