You might want to buy the Reactive Micro Transwarp GS clone if you intend to use the computer more often or for a longer while. The ASIC on the ZIP GSX is going to get problematic and in the end the ZIP will fail if you keep using it. I went through several ZIP cards over the years and i kinda hate myself for doing it. The TWGS is being sold and can easily be repaired since all parts are still available. Once the ZIP is dead, it will stay that way.* The ZIP is faster than the TWGS at the same clock. I would say that a 8 MHz ZIP is about as fast as a 10 MHz TWGS. Overclocking the ZIP might age it way faster. I stopped that after my very fast 15MHz/64K ZIP suddenly died only a few months after upgrading. If you want to overclock the ZIP anyways, stay below 13 MHz (12.5 MHz is proven to be stable for long). The card may take 15 or even 16 MHz for a while but don't expect the ASIC to last! The cache chips should be upgraded to the narrow dip variant if you upgrade the card. The procedure is not easy since the eyelets of the installed SRAM sockets can easily lift when heated. The PCB is much cheaper in quality than the TWGS and even a bit too much pressure when desoldering can damage the card. The cache chips should be at least 35ns, better 25ns or less. The W65C816 gets very picky when it is overclocked (>14MHz). The window for access to the cache gets exponentially smaller, the faster the CPU gets. If you don't want to desolder the cache sockets, you can make a cache adapter by bending the narrow dip SRAM pins to the side and solder them into machined 600mil dip-sockets. That way you can create 600mil SRAM "chips" from 300mil SRAMs. If you have problems getting faster chips, you can use the slower chips (should still be faster then the installed 70ns) for the data-cache and faster chips for the tag-cache. Replacing the cpu is without any dangers. The 14MHz part is less buggy and may even work better than the 10MHz part that is currently installed. You might even be able to go 10MHz without changing anything but the clock crystal. * I was able to revive one card for a while by replacing the two 74FXX chips at the bottom of the card with 74ASXX (_not_ ALS, FCT, ACT, BCT or AHCT!) variants. They are way faster and have a 'sharper' propagation curve 'where it counts' as well as around 30mA drive per pin (they get a bit hot, though). Please limit yourself to 12.5MHz at max, anything over that is kinda like suicide in the long run.

Heyy, finally a vintage computing crazy-mission I’ve done myself! The IIGS is an incredible little computer and I’m happy to see some more attention paid to its absurdly dedicated community. For ease of video capture (and many other reasons) you could probably use the excellent VidHD card for HDMI output. But I’m sure you already know that and are trying to find one… Also, grabbing new power supply guts from ReactiveMicro is a really good idea, as those ZipGS cards suck a lot of power.

On that topic, I was also pleasantly surprised that the MUD specifically said it wasn’t screen reader friendly. If you wanted to have a text-only web experience, without the TCP/IP stack overhead, using a capable 8 to 16 colour Apple terminal program, an RS-232 serial card for the Apple (with 9 or 25 pin serial port), a USB to serial null modem cable and a Linux computer (eg. Ubuntu) using an sgetty command to open the port, you could use the Apple as a tty dumb terminal to access text only web browsers like elinks, lynx and w3w with colour. I haven't done it with an Apple computer, but have had success on a C64 (1 MHz) and Amiga 500 (8 MHz). So theoretically it should be possible to do :)

@@belstar1128 I don't know. The black and white screen wasn't so unreasonable in the 80s if you were using it as a business machine. Word processing and spreadsheets don't need color, and a lot of printers were black and white anyways so it was a respectable option for graphic design, especially with how high resolution it was compared to the PC.

Very cool project! I still own an Apple IIgs which has been packaged away for over 30 years. I bought it new in 1987. While I find these repro projects impressive, it's unlikely that I would undertake such a project. Doing the project would be fun, but it's unlikely that after I got my IIgs on the internet I would ever actually do anything with it. A bit like watching old classic TV shows, after watching a few episodes I had my retro interest satisfied. With computing, for me, it's mostly about learning what modern technology can do next. It is fun to watch videos like this to see how people have made older technology do what was impossible when it was the cutting edge.
