Action Retro, to speed up your iMac G3's startup, try turning off Virtual Memory in the Memory control panel (I don't know how much RAM you've got installed on it, but if it's maxed out, go ahead anyway.) Also, hold down Cmd + Option while opening up the Memory control panel. This will allow you to turn off Memory checking at startup, which is another reason it takes a while to boot up (only works in Classic Mac OS).

A little tip: The CD/DVD drives on these older Macs tend to be very flaky. If you can, after installing, partitioning and formatting your new hard drive, copy the ENTIRE contents of the Mac OS install disk to the hard drive (if you copy exactly what was done on this iMac, copy the install CD onto the 2nd SSD partition.). That way, installation will be much faster, not to mention you won't get lots of hangups due to a bad install disk. If the installer is having trouble reading right off of the CD/DVD and if files copied no problem to the hard drive, you'll get a better installation process. I did this all the time when I was servicing these old PowerPC Macs.

Thank you for this video. I have a 500 MHz Graphite iMac G3. I like the older iMacs better. Mine has a really dark screen that is hard to see well when watching DVDs. Also the Harmon Kardon speakers has this foam that deteriorated making the sound very bad. I fixed it by using small rectangles of duct tape on each side of the speaker. I learned about the Carmageddon game from this video. I will be sure to try it out one day. Thumbs up for playing Star Trek Elite Force.

Probably a PCI card. Dunno which one I'd need to actually work with OpenFirmware … and I'd kinda like to use the original cables routed in the case if I could.

When I started out playing with Macs in the early 2000's I had a Tray-load iMac. After upgrading the RAM and tossing on OSX the Monitor died. Turned it into a Headless iMac. Modified the Motherboard Assembly and also modified a PC ATX power supply to power the thing and used a gender bender to use a VGA Monitor. I was half tempted to install it inside of a Dell 17inch CRT I had sitting around.

I remember my old tray-loading iMac got REALLY finicky at reading CD's in it's old age. You'd have to try a dozen times to get it to work, and then if the disc spun down in the middle of playing your game, you'd be back to square one the next time it needed to load something. No bueno for using Virtual Game Station. I'd certainly be interested an optical drive replacement on this machine, if only for old times sake.

I honestly understand your pain 100%. For some reason, the G3 Mac’s have always been VERY picky about SSD’s. For example, out of every iBook I’ve tinkered with, I’ve only been able to get ONE to accept an SSD. Meanwhile every PowerBook I’ve dabbled with, except for the original PowerBook G4, have accepted SSD’s. I find that the Msata + IDE adapter caddy method and if need be the desktop IDE to Laptop IDE converter board works the best, especially with brand name SSD’s. Getting off brand SSD’s can be hit or miss as they don’t always work. I don’t know why Mac’s are so picky with this matter but I guess that’s just typical Apple.

If you can find and install Ram Doubler 9.x on that thing, I recommend it over Mac OS's own virtual memory. Why? SSD's don't particularly last long with all the thrashing (reading/writing) about, if virtual memory is turned on.

Great video man. I'm actually switching out the original 10GB HDD on a slot-loader G3 and trying to clone it to an SSD (the original HDD still runs fine). I've used CCC 5 through my modern Macbook, and the clone was totally successful... but trying to boot just gives the folder icon with the blinky question mark. You did mention all the system files need to be on the first 10GB's of the partition, so I'll check that out now, but any other quirks you know of to get an SSD to successfully clone? Thanks for any advice and keep up the awesome vids, your 'cursed mac' series was 10/10!

two things... it needs to actually be in the first 8GB of the disk, if it goes over that it wont work. Ideally you want to set up an 8GB partition on the disk for the system, and use the rest for storage or whatever. Also, some SSDs are ... weird, and Ive found that the only way to get them to work is to format them on a PowerPC Mac running OS X 10.4 or 10.5, and to specifically "install mac os 9 drivers" when doing it... When I have tried to format on OS9, it sees the disk, formats it... but would not boot from it for some reason.

Is there any way to work around this issue?
@cjeelde
@cjeelde 10 ай бұрын
As I understand, TRIM got nothing to do with how long the SSD will last, it's about to avoid worse write speed over time. Some SSDs are better than others without TRIM enabled. Samsung 850 Pro (SATA) for example is crazy good. It will work fine without TRIM enabled for almost all users. Don't worry about that. Of course it's a bit better with TRIM enabled and what I know, you need Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later for TRIM support on Mac. With 10.6.8 you need TRIM Enabler (google it). That extension is needed for some later versions as well I think. In some later version of Mac OS X, Apple added official TRIM support that you have to enable with the Terminal. TRIM is a "bridge" between the OS and the SSD. No matter if you got TRIM support in the OS the SSD got Garbage Collection. Garbage Collection is a feature inside the SSD's controller/firmware. Works a little bit different in all SSDs but the basics is the same: keep the data stored as good as possible after deleting files. But yes, always pick as much storage as possible for the SSD because that will make it last longer. So in other words go for 120 or 128 GB instead of less than than if you wanna use it with this model of iMac. There's an upper limit for PATA on almost all Macs and PCs so 120-128 GB is the maximum. I believe some of the last Macs with PATA supported more than 120-128 GB (I'm not 100% sure about this) but to be on the safe side, 120-128 GB is the max storage to use. Almost all 2,5" SSDs are SATA so you need that adapter for these older Macs. But if you only gonna play some retro games on an older Mac with SSD instead of HDD, don't worry. Most operations are reading data and that will not hurt the NAND cells. It's only writing data that will hurt these cells, but you need to write so crazy much data to make it give up. So 40 or 60 GB or something like that will work fine for the SSD if you don't gonna write crazy much. The Mac OS 9 installation will require maybe 1-2 GB as most. The installer is on a CD. Then you will install some games and maybe 10 GB or more? After that you will write only a very little. A 60 GB SSD got probably 50 TBW. 50 000 GB data written. Let's say 60 000 GB for easy calculation. This means that you have to fill your 60 GB SSD up 100% one thousand times. And after 1000 times the SSD will most likely not die, TBW is only a warranty. So you can fill your SSD 100% each day for 3 years in a row. How likely is that for a 60 GB SSD that you will put an OS on and sone retro games? As I said: don't worry too much. Not even if you can find one SSD that's around 40-60 GB. It will last probably at least for 15-20 years at least for many users. But of course it's better with as much storage capacity as possible. My advice is to simply go for the best deal and a brand that you and most other people trust. One SSD to avoid: Samsung 840 EVO (SATA). That's their first TLC SSD and that model had huge problems with the read performance. They tried to solve it with firmware updates and maybe they solved it at last? But to stay on the safe side: avoid that SSD! The read speed was worse than the read speed for hard drives! For the full story about this, google it. Just avoid 840 EVO! Sorry for a long comment but I hope the facts are appreciated :)

@minty_Joe 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHal900 If your SSD is 120GB or larger, you'll need to partition the drive with 8GB as the first partition. The IDE drive controller on those old Macs are the limitation, not the OS. They can accept up to 120GB partition sizes, but anything larger than that (especially when you install an OS on the 1st partition) you'll need to set the first one to 8GB. And, yes, your 500 MHz model will take OS X Tiger perfectly fine. Oh, and check to see that Firmware Update version 4.1.9f4 has been applied before you install Tiger (You find that file in the OS 9.2.x install CD or online search for it.). :-)

@@minty_Joe I understood somewhere this issue was not something affecting those latest generation of iMac G3. I just installed it last week on my 128Gb SSD without partitioning, with the latest firmware. I think it cannot be just hardware related since some OSes seem to not be affected. What do you think @Action Retro. BTW system flies with the SSD.

@minty_Joe 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrHal900 You might be right. Maybe they did correct this problem on the newer models. All I can tell you is that some of the models featuring the Old World Mac design and some of the early on New World Macs had this limitation. I have always stayed on the side of caution and installed a drive well under the 120GB size, so I never experienced the issue myself. At any rate, it's great to hear it worked for you. 9.x has a lower memory footprint than OSX and is much faster on these particular G3 chips (ie. Rev. A through Rev. D). Personally, I wouldn't recommend anything higher than OSX 10.1 or 10.2 on these old machines, even though they'd be capable of 10.3 and even 10.4 with enough RAM. Problem is, this guy's iMac has a bad RAM slot, so he can only make use of one of the two dimms, effectively limiting his options to half of the maximum possible RAM. These old Rev. D iMac G3's can unofficially support 512 MB of RAM, but like I said.... without that 2nd slot, he can only do 256MB of RAM, unless he can find a single 512MB stick that's actually compatible........ i've never seen one.

You're seriously asking why he's replacing a 20+ year old mechanical hard drive with an SSD? Whatever OS he installs, relying on that old hdd is just asking for problems.

If it has files you need on it, you may be able to change an OS X password by booting from an OS X installer CD. If you don't need files, I'd recommend just doing a fresh installation of the operating system.

Battery hasn’t exploded? It’s obviously not a Duracell battery. The Duracell batteries in all of my household remote controls have exploded and leaked. I noted one remote yesterday and after cleaning I checked all the other remotes and they had all leaked. 6 remote with leaking Duracell batteries. Never will I ever buy another Duracell

ssd > compact drive or sd card solution. sd cards are hit/miss and usually fail from abuse (using an OS on them). btw, if anyone has an "estimate" in price for a game wizard (voodoo card for mezzanine slot) hit me up. the PCI versions for Mac sell for about $150, however this one last sold on ebay for around $65 (missed it). i personally can't go over $80, but let's see your offer anyway.

So I read where the pram batteries are known to explode & u could leave them out, so i did even though I already bought a new one. I dunno if this was the fix but when I put the new one in everything booted just fine. U can see mine on instagram @bramad_artworks. Thanks for ur help on that build. It helped me a lot. Take care!
