F-M ratio is a measure of the amount of food, or BOD, that is given to the microorganisms in the aeration tank. The microorganisms are the mixed liquor volatile suspended solids, or MLVSS. FM ratio= kg of BOD/kg of MLVSS (microorganisms) For example, 0.25 FM means = if 25 kg BOD then 100 kg microorganisms in form of MLVSS. (25/100=0.25 FM ratio)

The retention period for conventional is anywhere from 4-8 hours. For extended, its 18-24 hours.
