Active Lifestyle: What's better for an active family? An Estate or SUV? We found out!

When you think of the ideal vehicle for an active family, your brain probably jumps straight to an SUV. But that wasn't always the case. In the pre-SUV world, if you wanted to pack the whole family in the car, and load up with bags, bikes and equipment, the obvious choice of vehicle was the estate car. With big squared off boots and plenty of space inside, the humble estate versions of saloons and hatchbacks have been ferrying families around for decades. Nowadays, it's a different story. With their popularity on the wane, and SUVs on the rise, manufacturers are dropping estate models - even Volvo (a brand synonymous with the estate car) has dropped all estate vehicles from its line-up.
We wanted to know if the manufacturers were making the right choice and if the estate was still a viable alternative to the ever-popular SUV. So, we recruited a family with a very active lifestyle, packed up all their gear, and headed out to test which car would be best for them, the BMW 3 Series Touring or the Audi Q5. Estate's boots still beat most Suv's.

Definitely the estate - lower centre of gravity make them better to drive . They often have a greater carrying capacity. I have a 2019 VW Passat 4Motion - four wheel drive, powerful diesel engine aka the Golf GTD and lots of space make it a very versatile car.

Yes they do if equipped with four wheel drive - remember not all SUVs have four whee drive.

Best to check with the dealer of whatever car you want - there is capability but much depends upon the terrain - four wheel drive estates do have a slightly raised height and underbody protection. So best check with the dealer.

Don’t forget the mpv - even more practical than an estate.,but manufacturer’s are building suvs instead. A stupid decision in my opinion.

Definetly the estate - even I had a Skoda Kodiaq - for me I prefer my Skoda Octavia Combi. It has a masive boot and the back seats have a lot of space and are easy to get the childrens car seats in. And the biggest advanage is that i can fit my roof box or my roof tend for the childrens easy. Dont need a ladder ;-)

The Skoda Octavia estate is arguably the most practical car around - comfortable, spacious and relatively cheap to run - great choice!

​@@motorscouk Theres a new big superb coming out ..The Estate version should be class beating capacity. For all round use a MPV or estate with raised or adjustable ride hight and 4wD is very useful even on bad country roads drives tracks, fields campsites passing through flooded roads fording etc. Then theres snow and loose road surfaces. Think Citroen Safari estates but Skoda build.

Totally u fair comparison. A petrol car versus an electric car with a boot full of lithium. Why not do prper comparison petrol vs pertol, diesel vs diesel or milk float vs milk float.

for myself and estate all the way as I sold my range Rover evoque went to Mercedes C class estate much prefer the estate
