Awesome 5 quickies of differences: 1. Work/life balance (harmony). 2. Housing and Food allowance. 3. Sick leave and hours. 4. Rank structure 5. Lack of mandatory lists of health care tasks. Thank you!

What great information. So, I've been a federal employee for 18 years since retiring from the USAF in 2005. The job can come with moments of stresses, but by far the best decision I have made. If you are thinking of joining the GS ranks, go for it. Create a profile in USAJOBS and look for those positions you would qualify for. I have options to teleworking once a week and working with the active duty force, both officers and enlisted is both an honor and really a lot of good times. Good luck in finding your perfect dream job. Don't get frustrated.

After being both my assessment: Active duty military = overworked and alot of responsibility for little money and career limitations. GS employee = work at your pace for stable work and more money and freedom to advance quickly.

You could find active duty military and state government jobs to be similar. I had applied to the VA and they wanted me to work a 2:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. shift with rotation saturdays at their lab. I was like O_O. So much for work life balance, even if I am getting Sunday, Monday, and Saturdays (some) off.

Spot on, especially as you age in the GS ranks and start doubling the ages of your coworkers. But, we are still held accountable for doing our jobs. Witnessed 2 seasoned GS employees get terminated. Not like working at Google, where you can skate for years until management realizes you are totally dead weight to their organization.

Thank you for this helpful information. Are GS employees required to move every few years or can they stay in the same location for 15+ years? Are they required to deploy?
@armandcuret1
@armandcuret1 2 жыл бұрын
You can typically stay in one location for 30+ years. You can always apply for job announcements in different locations if you want to move around. The vast majority of GS employees are not required to deploy anywhere. Thanks for watching!

Reading this comment from military really brings a whole different perspective to the table. I am so glad I found Armand's channel. I had no idea that you guys still think you have to be deployed and cannot stay in one location. Glad you are back home and YES, you have more freedom in civilian life.

Punitive action against military for stupid shit, they treat you like a baby. Getting paperwork for just looking at someone, getting kicked out for things that won't matter in the civilian side...too much harassment and pettiness.

Each department and office has their own culture and tempo. I have experience with DOE, VA and HUD. I imagine you took an offer with DOD if it is overseas. I would say a lot better than while you were in uniform.

I heard federal govt. is thinking about 4 days work week is that true? can you make a video about it.

That is a good idea! Some feds do have 4 day work weeks because they choose to work four 10 hour days a week.

I may be getting a little off topic, but I just landed a state government job and they told me this as well. They were stating that I could start doing 4 day work weeks after my probation (which is 6 months long). Problem is, 10 hour workdays! O_O They also stated that there is something called 37.5 hour weeks. You would be technically considered full time, but they pay you on salary anyway and so you are getting paid no matter the number of hours.

William, I am a GS employee in the Washington D.C. area and I recieve a 30% COLA increase due to the location. The website to check the COLA rate for your location is www.federalpay.org/gs/locality
