I was a Federal Correctional Officer for 20 years and I worked all custody/security levels but mainly high security. I firmly believe that before you can be a cop patrolling the streets you need to start law enforcement behind the fence/wall. We don’t carry firearms inside so you’re forced to develop good communication skills, confrontation avoidance and de-escalation skills. Less than lethal use of force and learning how to use only the reasonable and necessary amount of force to gain/regain control of a situation. Police in the street, for the most part, resort to their firearms as first choice(deadly force) I understand situation move quickly and life and death decisions are made in split seconds but with proper training Officers can discern when they can negotiate/communicate, use less than lethal force and only as a last resort use deadly force. Working with hardened convicts with the only weapon being your brain, mouth, body alarm/radio and maybe pepper spray, one learns quickly how to effectively communicate and control hostile situations. Now these cops lives have drastically changed forever. If not convicted, they’ll probably never work in law enforcement again. They’ll have to live with their conscience that they took a life. The surviving family of the victim will never be the same. So many bad consequences for a split second decision. 😢
@bwalsh1105 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately a lot of correctional officers become corrupted by the system when surrounded by criminals all day long and I get that it’s all part of the system at times and I agree they need to develop social skills and deescalation skills before walking a beat. But this might not always be the best solution. I think it’s ultimately a media problem. Officers are almost exclusively shown in a bad light or under stressful circumstances Vs the good things they do. Probably about 90% negative to 10% positive. If there was more positive reenforcement surrounding the job would attract more good people to the job but instead we’re losing the good people and only attracting the bad. Same goes for politics as well for the most part. It’s sad and hopefully can change
@heythere4970 Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent proposal. 100% sold. Force potential officers to deal with the worst of the worst without the option of a firearm. Weed out those that simply don't have the personality to do the job. Ideally, weed out the officers who don't have the physical ability to do the job.
@covrtdesign5279 Жыл бұрын
I have been deployed 5x, conceal carry for 10 years now, and still would never want my weapon out unless it is an immediate threat. Fantastic point about you and others going through corrections to learn de-escalation, communication, and how to spot when something is about to happen. Every, single officer coming out of the academy needs to go at least one year in corrections or something similar, no firearms, but proper firearms training and safety should be learned and trained daily while on this period. Not saying it will help a ton, but it might make situations like this for a rookie officer or one that has never had to draw their firearm, a little more calm and calculated.

I’ll forever be thankful for one officer in particular named officer smalls from the Westminster Police Department. He had to come to my house after we called 911 regarding my brother, who was schizophrenic and Duel diagnosed mental illness and on drugs one of the worst that you can encounter because they just don’t have any regard for anyone especially when they are schizophrenic and on drugs, the officer that came to my house that evening was so good to my brother and the way he talked to him was amazing. Sadly, when he took my brother into custody he didn’t fully search him and after he treated my brother so kind, my brother went into the police department with meth in his pocket the officer got into trouble because he didn’t thoroughly check him. The saddest thing about this story was that my brother was murdered by another drug induced schizophrenic out on the streets, and the officer was killed in the line of duty. 😢 That officer was loved by my family and many others in our community for his kindness to everyone he interacted with ❤

I applaud you two for creating videos even when it doesn’t shine a good light on our LEO. Many choose the profession for all the wrong reasons and some just aren’t cut out for being a LEO. I remember at the beginning of my career with a municipality that encouraged bad behavior from management…… the chief down. Once the line was crossed with a citizen and business owner that actually had enough pull , total council members changed along with management from city manager down. The old city manager did fire the police chief trying to save his own ass but he did finally lose his job and the new chief was also terminated in due time. One LEO rose through the ranks and was made chief which was the best decision ever because that LEO was good hearted and understood that we all work for the citizens. Others believed that they ruled over the citizens and were weeded out fully. There was a few missteps along the way which cost the city financially due to violations of rights but these officers and the management learned. They tried protecting the community over the rights of those who were not from the community which didn’t cause physical harm or damage but was wrong to infringe upon others rights. After 23.5 years of service, I left with respect for the police department that I had very little respect when first hired. Training and culture is every agencies foundation and where a culture of respect and integrity with the understanding that every law enforcement staff member knows who they work for and understands what their functions are earns the respect from their community and citizens of surrounding communities. These LEO’s in this video had no business being employed as law enforcement and they now will pay for their mistakes and terrible crime they committed. I feel that harsher punishment should be given for those law enforcement officers that infringe upon others rights and those who commit murder while violating others rights. There are a vast majority of good LEO’s but the few give the good ones bad public relations. The bad managers such as chiefs, captains, sheriffs, FBI, ATF, etc, are who need removal first and foremost from their positions. The federal agencies are far too corrupt due to political pressures and a criminal culture. US Marshalls and Secret Service should be the only federal law enforcement. They the federal law enforcement have become the most distrusted and most dangerous force currently along with the secret courts and such violating the Constitution of the United States against the people who employ them.

I wouldn't be suprised if their murder charges drop to a lesser manslaughter charge or even dropped all together. Officers should be held to the same standard as private citizens. What if there was a child in that house that the officer was shooting through the walls of?
@Bass_attack7755 Жыл бұрын
Same standard? Heck no they should receive punishment 5x a normal citizen. They are held to a higher standard...... or so people think. They often get away with alot
@ned6938 Жыл бұрын
If it were dropped to manslaughter then they probably would be convicted. Therefore, it will not be an option for the jury. The prosecutor is only charging them to try to keep the people from rioting. He isn't going to try to convict the cops. The jury isn't going to have enough to convict them of murder and that is why the prosecutor is charging them with it.

I've had to be the new guy a lot and learn a lot of different things, and I believe that standard, current American Law Enforcement training needs a giant overhaul---- it generally creates automaton robots who don't know how to think outside the box, who don't know how to take a step back, chill, and analyze what the fuck is actually going on, and take appropriate action forward from there.

I appreciate your viewpoint, but I think that it is only going to get a lot worse (and that is by design, but that's for another time). The system won't let them get convicted. I can almost guarantee that the judge won't allow any damning evidence such as the body cam footage and all the jury is going to have to go on is the cops testimony. And the prosecutor isn't going to try very hard either. This is just to get people to calm down and not riot in the town. By the time they are found not guilty everyone will have forgotten all about this. The cops will also more than likely be on paid leave until that happens and the union will cover their attorney.
