Umar Khalid rose to national fame in 2016, when he was branded “anti-national” and charged with sedition by the Indian government for being a threat to national integrity. We spent a day with the civil rights activist and former student leader, against the backdrop of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests. In this episode of VICE Meets, we spend time with Khalid in New Delhi, a city currently in the middle of one of the biggest social unrests in the country. This is where we explore what it is to be a young, pro-democratic voice in India, the need for secularism in the times of hate crimes and religion-based lynchings, and round it off with his speech at Shaheen Bagh-the 'Tahrir Square of India' that has the longest women-led protest against the Indian government's discriminatory policies on citizenship.
