AcTN | adult swim history

AcTN was an anime action block that ran from January 2005 up to the official relaunch of Toonami on May 26, 2012. The block featured shows like Inuyasha, Case Closed, Samurai Champloo, and many other dubbed series on weekdays and saturday nights.
The block was originally called just Adult Swim Action until being rebranded to the shorter name, AcTN in 2005.

Being a teen in the 00s when anime was getting a feel in the west was something else. Just watched a special Toonami block from late 90s to 00s a couple weeks ago and it reminded me how how much anime choices they chose and went through. It was truly a trippy and cool time.

It's mostly blender work, You make some planes and unwrap them, texture them, materials, colours. You overlap those parts as fullbright/no shadows, you rig those planes to bones, you angle them, then you move the bone locally. You parent bones to other bones, then you can get upward scroll on some parts, sideways scroll on other parts. After that it's just texturing tricks and ideas to make some parts make sense, logos and such. Same with text, you parent the text to a bone or make text loops Took me awhile to figure out how to do it even with blender, but back then this was all done using scripts and primitive tools

That little bit from 4:33-4:48 has haunted me for almost 20 years. It played ONCE and I was always thinking how nice it would be to hear and see it again. I’m glad this was recommended to me, I feel a sense of peace! Not to mention I won’t question my sanity anymore since I saw this way past my bedtime and thought I imagined it. lol I do remember quite a few of these and it explains a lot about my taste in aesthetic and sound. These clever bastards influenced more of my personality than I thought. Love it. 😎

I remember the FUCK outta the first two.3:25 seems kinda familiar too. All of these must’ve been a good bit before the Owl Street bumps (the ones that had J Dilla and Flying Lotus as soundtracks). As far as modern bumps go, the anime ones are still straight fucking VIBES!

@Stewie Williamson Yeah, I couldn't remember if they lasted that long? I do have some old bump listings now thanks to Swimpedia so I can now check to confirm when they last showed the 5 second bumps. I know by 2009 they were gone though and they simply just showed weekday bumps.

On weekdays, these would come on really late in the block (initially, at least). 1:09 was always my favorite. I spent so many nights as a kid staying up late to watch the anime portion of the block. Occasionally having my mom wake up and bang on my door, telling me to go to bed. Good times.

I wish I could built a time machine so I can go back to 2005. Those bumps were awesome and it's the only reason why I love watching Adult Swim. No doubt, they did aired great Anime which the likes of Inuyasha, s-cry-ed, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, FLCL, Bleach, Paranoia Agent, and more. No disrespect but in my perspective, Toonami isn't really watchable than it was from 2012-2019. Sure, great series like Akame Ga Kill, Black Lagoon, Blue Exorcist, Parasyte, Dimension W, Promise Neverland, Sword Art Online, and Attack on Titan were great show. But I don't like the way they aired the same shows we have seen before. I hope Toonami can get it turned around and make it more watchable again, hopefully I can go back to watch Toonami.
