Finally, Cedric, we`ve been waiting for you to get your mittens on "Okay" 😁 I love this song, and video :) I will quote the things I read on dimashnews _ In the words of Alina Veripya (video director and writer of the script) : “This is a very beautiful and deep love story that takes place during the years of Stalin’s repressions. In this horror, in this piercing cold, in this crime, the love of two people is born, as if they did not come from this world. And they are so pure, so beautiful in their feelings, that no darkness can extinguish this light." On the question of location, the team made an unanimous decision to shoot the MV in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of > 1937. Their life and love story is invaded, and broken by NKVD (old name for KGB), representatives of the regime`s power, who could pick on you for any reason, take anything from you, throw you in jail, legally execute you, and even assassinate you, shoot you in the back. The officer represents power, so he can claim anything he wants, and he can get away with anything. It`s not about forbidden love, it`s about the attitude of people representing power in an authoritarian regime, to destroy, reduce a "world full of color" down to only "a flash in the sky". The switch back and forth between images of the happy couple and images of the girl being pestered by the NKVD officer, has the purpose of highlighting the contrast between the sun-lit beauty of good and love, and the grim-colored ugliness of evil intentions. Our hero and his girl try to accept the forced separation between them, the new "definition" of happiness under the abusive regime, but they can`t bear nonsense forever, and they try to escape it. The subject of the story is the fate of beauty, good and purity under an oppressive regime, and the self-entitlement of evil, that puts it`s brutal stamp over it, with the gunshot. The screen going black before the gunshot helps keep the focus on the attitude of evil, who doesn`t know to do anything other than hurt, successfully or not - instead of who the NKVD officer managed to hit or not. That gunshot remains ringing in the dark, making it timeless, leaving us with a bitter taste, and making it a powerful reminder of historical brutality. _______________________ what I wrote after the quote from dimashnews (Alina Veripya`s words, and the reason for choosing the location) - is my interpretation, based on Dimash`s previous use of history portrayal with his songs. ('Samaltau' - russian empire forcefully drafting young men from occupied countries to shed their blood ; 'Daididau' - poem of a kazakh poet imprisoned and executed by the soviet regime). And based on my own experience with such history, living in a country who suffered under occupation and the brutality of stalinism decades ago. (my own great-grandparents and grandparents spent time in prison for reasons from borrowing a french book under a soviet regime, to owning land earned by hard work) This is why I believe that Dimash and the team`s purpose was the bigger picture, the accent on history, and not a spy-movie type of suspense and cliff-hanger.

Beautiful reaction, thank you! It's such a poignant little story, and I love the juxtaposition of the modern song with the retro video. To me it's like a whisper from the other side. The sheets are like a transition into whatever is next. Great observation that Dimash has a theme of running away with his ladylove into the unknown, wherever love takes them. He's such a romantic at heart ❤️ However, this one does have an intentional layer referring to current events. The story is set in 1937 like it says in the beginning. The time of the Great Purge in the Soviet Union, during which millions of people died, in Kazakhstan as well. These times are vividly remembered, and I don't think Dimash would choose this era purely as a setting for romance. This video was filmed 6 days before the war broke out, and the premier was going to be in early March but was postponed. Instead he chose to bring it out on the eve of the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression & Famine in Kazakhstan. Knowing this background the video & the song are so much more poignant & beautiful to me. There is so much detail & so much emotion in just three minutes, it's a little masterpiece. Bravo Dimash for telling such a story at this time 🖤❤️🖤

Ever since I first saw this video, I could hardly wait to see your review of the visuals as well as the music. Not only is Dimash super talented, he seems to attract other very talented people into his orbit. It goes without saying that I loved Dimash's performance in this one, but the visuals also conveyed the story so well. The MV is beautiful, yet also a disturbing reminder of how history might end up repeating itself if authoritarian abuses of power are allowed to continue unchecked.

The way she looked at him made me feel like he had lied to her and told her Dimash was dead..she seemed so shocked that Dimash was alive. He knew she didn't want to be with him and maybe resisted this idea less because without Dimash she doesn't care or want to live anyway. After she looks at him accusingly he kinda has this yeah yeah I know just go expression but it's full of anger ..he's bitter and a sore loser.. she's so unhappy without Dimash it's just miserable for him almost like he wanted what Dimash had..the warm happy bathed in light world..so because he knows she will never be happy with him he lets her go but there's no way in hell he will let Dimash win. It's amazing how much info that brief exchange imparted to me. How to tell a story of possibly years in just a few minutes!

Cedric, thank you for your (as always professional, detailed and very emotional) analysis of this beautiful clip💖 Dimash chose this script from the director's 4 proposals, and it turned out that it was also her favorite story👍 How to fit a whole wonderful story in 3 minutes, without a word, only with a whispered commentary on Dimash's song? 🤔 Managed to! It is known (from the backstage photos) that a scene was planned in which Dimash hit by a bullet falls into the arms of his beloved, but I think the final ending is better and leaves a lot of room for guesswork and imagination for Dears😁 I hope that, in addition to the next beautiful hits, Dimash will also show us his acting talent in the long film😍😋 Greetings from Poland💋🇵🇱

MY THEORY [edit: that I seem to have wrote a whole movie script around!] is that this isn't about Dimash's relationship with his lady at all - it's about the Captain's! How it had all started for him as part of his investigation, but over time he'd found himself genuinely falling for her, this light in the darkness of his world - and though he might have been able to convince himself for a while that her acquiescence was/could lead to something more, he knew the truth - that with every kiss, every dance, every moment they spent together, she was picturing times with Dimash - and, knowing he could never make her happy, he did the one thing he could do - he set her free... The whole gun thing I think, might have been for show - for his colleagues, the other citizens, maybe even the couple themselves? Or maybe he'd planned to or just felt he should, shoot one or both of the lovers - whichever way though, I think a knowing passed between him and Dimash at the end, before he then fired his gun into the air and returned to his car, ready to complete the paperwork for his transfer out of district...

No subtitles of course, but the auto-translation from the auto-generated Russian subtitles is actually not as bad as I expected, and gives some idea of what they are talking about. Poor Dimash, with absolute pitch, had to play that completely out of tune piano 😅kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXTagWxri5ublZo

Okay, Dimash and his team succeeded again. Melody, lyric, Dimash's voice, video = all perfect
@tirallala12 жыл бұрын
👉 Dimash's broken, delicately breathy voice, a simple melody with uncomplcated pop rhythm (reminiscent a bit of 'I Miss You'), loving, sad but also comforting words and haunting images... and this adorable smile from Dimash... tears flow over my smiling face. For me, the lyrics, the pop beat and the images of the video all go together very well. Dimash leaves his beloved because she has someone else. He knows that the other can become dangerous to him, but he doesn't know that his beloved is being blackmailed by this secret policeman. He thinks she's happy. Dimash assures her that everything is 'okay', he accepts and she should too. Life goes on and the pain will fade. It seems easy for him to give up his love. (pop beat, almost like a fast heartbeat) ... but you can hear the pain in Dimash's voice. He's fooling himself and her. The secret policeman, who suspects something, wants to catch Dimash. When he finally realizes that the young woman will never love him, he gives her the 'choice'. She flees with Dimash... A shot is fired... End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great! Director Alina Veripia was blown away when she learned she was to create the story and video for Dimash's new song. Dimash also chose Alina's favorite from 4 stories: A beautiful and deep love story set in the years of Stalin's repression. This love is so deep, pure and immortal, It defies the horror, the fear, the penetrating cold and darkness of this time. The video was recorded in color but looks black and white, very dark, spookey. Only the lovers are shown in a bright, sun-drenched, warm, gold-bronze setting. These scenarios reinforce the intense feelings emanating from Dimash's breathy, delicate voice and the haunting, magical and beguiling, but also from the frightening and disturbing images. The location was St. Petersburg, appropriate to the dark year 1937 in which the video takes place. (Source and more information on Dimashnews) - Music - Igor Krutoy, *1954 in Ukrainian SSSR, singer and songwriter in Ukrainian and Honored Artist and music titan in Russia (billionaire). He came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship. - Lyrics - Igor Nikolaev, *1959, Russian singer and songwriter; Honored Artist of Russia. He also wrote the lyrics for „I Miss You“. - Written and directed by Alina Veripia * Backstage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXTagWxri5ublZo * The song Okay is available for listening and purchase on music streaming platforms: lnk.to/Dimash-Okay

Thank you for a detailed and enthusiastic reaction-analysis! I enjoy this song, very soothing, meditative. But the video I really love. A masterpiece. Every frame is so beautiful and full of meanings, the ending tragic, sublime. This happens in Stalin's repressions in 1930's. So there are very important themes besides the true love story. I see those white sheets as symbols of freedom. Dimash standing firmly in front of them - perhaps he is in opposition against the repressive regime? Could explain why the authorities were after him (when they raided the apartment). A very humane work; it reminds of those (millions of) people who suffered under the repressive rule. And still do... Interesting detail - The clip was released around the day when Kazakhstan pays honor to the victims of Repressions.

(In my opinion)...The passion and dedication when Dimash is performing a song can only be compared with the person who has influenced him to sing leaving everything on stage: His idol, the queen, the incomparable, the Goddess: Lara Fabian...She is a lyric soprano singer and multilingual composer, with a amazing vocal range and incredible breath control, which is one of the things that Dimash admires the most about Lara...She speaks 5 languages and sings in more than 15 languages....That's why she is the inspiration for Dimash and several singers around the world...You can see on KZbin covers of her songs made by singers of the stature of: Dimash, Diana Ankudinova, Polina Gagarina, Rimar, Forestella, Sissel Kyrkjebo, Floor Jansen, Diana Navarro, Morissette Amon, Gabriel Henrique, Katrina Velarde, Cakra Khan and others...Please react to her songs, all masterpieces, in LIVE versions, because Lara is more impressive when she sings live, so you can see why she is the idol of Dimash...Try to do it in this order and almost all songs are from the same Lara’s concert “From Lara With Love” in Montreal 1999, one of her best works: 1) Je Suis Malade (Singing in French)...2) Caruso (Singing in Italian)...3) Je T'AIME (2002 Live version in Paris Singing in French)...4) Perdere L'Amore (1999 Live version Singing in Italian)...5) Adagio (1999 Live version singing in english)...6) Broken Vow (1999 Live version singing in English)...7) You are Not From Here (1999 Live version singing in English)...8) Quédate (1999 Live version singing in Spanish)....9) Ti Amo Cosi (2019 Live version Singing a trío with Dimash and Aida Garifullina)....I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Lara...Here you have the link of her amazing performance of the song “Je Suis Malade”....kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3m2qp5qiKynq7s

At the end of the video, you can imagine yourself how you want to end it. That's what is so great about it!! I love the song and Dimash's voice in this one. He is the best! This video is set in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. The secret police had total power. They executed millions of people--not just their political enemies, but also ethnic minorities who they considered "untrustworthy." Musicians, dancers, and artists were among them. Dimash as the hero perhaps represents both of these categories. End? It leaves us stunned. What will happen? You brood and brood, but you can't get it out of your head. For whom is the glass always half full and for whom is it always half empty? ... Fascinating, clever ... great!

It's a shame that they decided to delete the final 46 seconds but Dimash's death scene was so well acted by him that there would have been broken hearts all around Deardom.

The cut between police dudes hands around her neck, with Dimash lovingly kissing her neck, gets me every time. So devastating. The director gave Dimash 4 treatments and he picked this one. I love it, even though it makes me sad. Thanks for shouting out “DUTCH ANGLE”-it feels like a complete reaction from you when you just indiscriminately yell it out :)

Great reaction. Love to hear your film analysis. So interesting that some people have to try and understand it all in a literal sense, and others, like you, so go with the flow and the juxapositions and the journey. Thank you. 🥰

love your reactions. you understand Dimash very deeply. The video is not directly related to today's events. This is 1937, Russia. the time of mass repressions that Stalin did. People were afraid. Any person could be arrested, shot for no reason. But in a sense, this is really modern Russia. now we also have repressions, not on such a scale. but any person who opposes the authorities, against Putin, against the war, under the new law, can be arrested and imprisoned for 15 years. So it goes.

Thank you Cedric. Love your expertise and observations. My thought is that Dimash got away from the evil guy before in a slick manner and that the way that Dimash looks back accessing what is going on and then ducking in that last shot, tells me that he knows how to get away from that arrogant evil man. Also, with the sheets and them running and the evil guy being confident in his power while walking slowly, tells me that he could not make that shot. Even if he hit one of them, it is very iffy that it would be a fatal shot. Dimash's character knew what he was doing, he is smart and savvy. He chose that spot with those pristine sheets hanging and moving as they ran away. He chose an advantageous route and knew where they were heading. Evil guy thinks that his power and gun is all that is needed to bring them down. No. They got away and escaped to Kazakhstan and lived and loved happily ever after :) This was filmed in St. Petersburg, Russia and the time is during Stalin's reign.

"how can I serve that (the song)" yes, you understand his artistry vision very well!! There is also a behind the scenes video, not professionally done, but it is interesting to see the filming process. A female commenter who responded to my comment wrote that he filmed the MV this way as it reflects "our difficult and tragic history". I had a hard time with the video due to my lack of understanding. And I wrote that I wish DQ wouldn't start going down this form of "entertainment" path. He released it on May 31st as that is a significant day, in his country, of remembrance for their difficult history battling for their freedom. One person said that the beginning piano is recorded and then played backward to get that affect and he believed that this technique and this song is, at least in part, inspired by a B Eilish song that uses the same technique. Brilliant analysis as always!! I REALLY love Dimash in this style, and hope he'll do more songs in this lighter singing style to be included in his full repertoire. Subject matter was hard for me especially as an American and just after the latest big mass shooting at a school......but I understand the thinking behind his choice now......

Cedric, please please please review Akkuym / My Swan [Official MV] 🙏🏻 You are the only reactor that I am aware who is critiquing in this way and you are absolutely sooooo good at it. Your reaction to the ending sequence was very similar to mine. I was sitting here the first time I saw it going no! no! no! Watching your reaction actually enabled me to watch the video again. It may sound silly, but I was so distraught that I hadn't viewed it again although I had listened to the song itself many times since.

It's always enjoyable to listen to your multi-artistic viewpoints on Dimash's projects. At first, I understood the words on the screen to be Dimash's, but after watching the 3:13 take several more times, I began to wonder if the words depict the General's sardonic twist on the meaning of "okay". 🤦🏻♀
