That's why a girl in Asian Boss interview scored him 3/10. Flower boy looking male celebrities have been a thing in 90s HK and Taiwan before Korean wave (Korean wave was started in East and South East Asia after world cup soccer 2002) , the difference just old HK-TW flower boys looking idols didn't put heavy make up on his face, but they have narrow small face with v shaped jaw (Aaron Kwok, Jimmy Lim, Alec Su, Jay Chou) like most current kpop male idols. Simu Liu would be okay for role in non-romance movie like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Pre-Hollywood Jackie Chan used to play comic relief character rather than "charming prince" troop. And for Guan Yu and war deities statue reference, even back in 90s no teenage girls nor young adults women in Chinese communities (both Mainland and Overseas) would say he is handsome charming prince, he is more like middle age uncle with intimidating looking. That's actually fit for war god, just not for charming prince. (Just for another comparison, Kratos in War of God video game franchise is also not qualified for Disney Charming prince).

I am so proud of you. I wish you hadn't seen or heard or could just ignore those ugly comments however you handled it with dignity and class. I am Chinese and I didn't know who you were before but now I think you are beautiful and more Chinese people start to think the same way now. So you gotta make sure the movie is so good to shut people's mouths. ugly or not is totally irrelevant, he landed a leading role to represent the asian community in mainstream media, soooo....Massive kudos to Simu for all his success as well as being able to stand up for himself so gracefully and be humble, positive and honest in his response. :) Love a man with class and confidence. that's attractive to me, and i'm sure a lot of other people too. I knew he was talented after initially seeing him in Wong-fu's shorts, and watching him succeed on kim's convenience and now soar with this new role. I respect Asian Boss' content, but was disappointed to see this "had to be" made into a video because it was a "popular opinion" amongst the chinese community. To each their own, i get it, but damn there's just something about the video that threw me off. Maybe because all the way all questions were phrased, or because the interviewer didn't seem to follow up to explain beauty standards in both cultures, instead it was all left to the participants... and the bottom line of all the comments from the participants were like "but yeah he's ugly." Really Poor compared to Asian Boss' usual videos, i think. Also, all the participants in the Asian Boss video didn't know who Simu was. It would've been interesting to get a few that know who he is for their opinion too to see if there was a rebuttal, it just seemed very one sided, compared to their other videos.

What a class act Simu. I did a double take when I first heard about the “ugly” comments. I thought I had misread or misunderstood the comments because I find Simu very attractive. I was always baffled by the ubiquity of eye surgery among many people of Asian descent and the emphasis on cosmetic appearance particularly amount Koreans. I was dismayed when my Chicana goddaughter rejected my Latino Barbie which I gave her, for the blond Barbie that someone else gave her. The hegemony of Western standards of beauty is not only harmful to non-white populations, but also has toxic consequences among mainstream American and western youth. Before I go on a long diatribe about the absurdity and harm caused by standards of physical beauty, I just want to commend Simu’s equanimity, honesty, and grace in his response to the thoughtless and cruel comments. Tbf, korea has been getting better with it. There's like a pretty large amount of actors that don't get eye surgery and stick to monolids as of late. Atm Seo Kang Joon is really popular for his looks. With women the progress has been slower, but its getting there. Squid game had Jung Hoyeon and Parasite had Park Sodam, both of whom are considered attractive but don't fit into the modern beauty standards. It's not perfect, but I think the perception of these looks are going to get better overtime. Unless Ccinema or Jcinema overtake Kcinema in popularity, then all that progress will go down the drain.

When I went back to India I got so many comments about how I don't look beautiful anymore because my skin is darker due to being in the sun more often. The problem is very simple. Chinese and eastern Asia in general have a very feminine taste in men. It's weird. I know. If you check that Asian Boss video(They took it down), they asked the chinese crowd who should play Shang Chi according to them. All the suggestions were these guys who look very feminine. Small triangular faces. In the rest of the world, we like broader masculine features. Something like George Clooney, Tom Hardy etc. My point is, Simu Liu is damn handsome. 6 Billion people agree with me. Excluding Chinese 1 Billion.

Bro, what you said is inherently whitewashed and racist. The idea that Asia likes "feminine men" is a fucking stereotype. A lot of Kpop idols have bangs that cover their face (which is considered feminine in the west) but if you look at their jaws from the side they usually have sharp masculine jaw lines. If you look up "Taecyeon shirtless" you will see that he's insanely more masculine, more broad and handsome than Simu Liu. If you're picky about picking a Chinese person and not an Asian person, he's Korean and not Chinese but north China has a population of 164,823,136 and there are many men who look like that. Sima is not ugly, he's just looks like a very average uncle in the Asian community. His face is not charismatic to the Asian community in the east, that's the truth whether you like it or not. You don't have the right to tell them their suggestions are wrong. You don't have a right to tell them to not be disappointed when they are. Just because they disagree with Sima Liu's casting choice, doesn't make them wrong. Unfortunately the pool of handsome and masculine male Asian actors, and asian actors is few in America because it has been less than 100 years of migration to America from Asia. Here is the real problem, if Sima Liu's movie flops because of the Asian community not even liking it, Hollywood wont make another Asian lead male casted film again. And that is what East Asians are worried about.

The feminine taste in men is real for the younger generation but not for the older generation which I belong to and I'm not just talking about the Chinese but also East Asian and South East Asians tastes which have similar taste. I myself find many current Asian actors too delicate and too perfect like they're photoshoped with too perfect skin. I'm of the generation who liked the likes of Andy Lau, Tony Leung or Felix Wong. The 80's and 90's Hong Kong actors type. I'm going to be honest here and say that Simu Liu is not considered good looking in neither generation. He's not ugly but very average in the face. Of course his body is top notch, but his face is average-looking.

The guys the girls think that are more fit for the movie are definitely not that feminine looking. They are actually the manly ones and not from the feminine pool. Like tony Leung that is playing the villain is viewed as a handsome man in Asian eyes, would you consider him feminine as well? Majority rules, if Asians don’t think he is good looking, then he really is not. He can be a good comedian though.

I have been a fan since I saw MR. Kim, you were so funny in it. I saw the marvels movie and loved it and hope you do many more movies. I agree with you about Asia finding white features to be better. I think it is awful they push that so much and I saw it being in Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. Lots of advertising to have white skin. Things have changed a lot since I was a kid and now I see many more Asian actors and models. You are a very sexy man and anyone saying you are not is crazy. Whatever his past posts were CONTROVERTIAL that spreads all over the internet i just wanted to say that people grow more and learn more from everyday lives. People tend to look at ure mistakes and start calling names because of that and it makes u want to disappear right? What i'm trying to say is...people do change, in a good way really. Maybe not now maybe not tomorrow or next week but SOMEDAY...we'll reflect on the things that we had done in the past and be better. Don't let ure past mistakes affected ure daily life people. I would say Simu Liu got the last laugh on his haters, who, sadly, seem to hate themselves. If they can't see how handsome this man is on the outside, and absolutely beautiful and charming on the inside, then something is REALLY wrong with THEM!!! Like he said, he's got absolutely NOTHING to be ashamed of. He, his cast members, the director, producers and the entire Marvel team knocked the Shang Chi movie straight outta da park!!! Enjoyed the movie sooooo much, I've watched it repeatedly on Disney+. It's the Asian version of Black Panther, maybe even better. Culture in both films are beautifully portrayed and sensitively executed. Bravo 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I'm a new, complete Simu Liu fan, and can't wait to see him on the People magazine cover as the Sexiest Man Alive!!! [I'm calling it NOW!!!]

I don't understand why people are defending him. Like he is doing great in his career. The only people that need to be called out are people who would be disrespecting him and making him feel bad.
