My grandmother had schizophrenia and it was challenging. When she was on her medication, she was zombie like. No matter how much we altered the medicine. When she was off her medication, she was my best friend. But about three times a year, she would have these rages. They’d last for days and go away. As time went on they would happen more frequently. By the time that she was older, she was on medication but she was never herself again. This was a person who made my childhood magical. To see this happen to her over the course of her life really broke my heart. I loved her so much.

I have two adult children with schizophrenia. Everyone’s experience will be different. I am glad his sister seems to have a good grasp on this illness. But please don’t watch this and think everyone that has schizophrenia will manage well like his sister. Schizophrenia can be totally debilitating even with medication. But I love to hear positive stories for those that do have this disease ❤

Yes, my family member did well on medication for two years only to begin having serial hospitalizations. Medical providers did not listen when family suggested meds had become less effective and needed to be reconsidered. 10 months and several hospitalizations later: doctor declares that meds had become less effective. 🙄

@@fdm2155 It’s very frustrating. My daughter was hospitalized for two weeks and we were told at discharge she was “stabilized” only for her to be released and to walk on the Los Angeles freeway. Schizophrenia is a very frustrating disease. My son was on monthly injections and that zombies him out so now he is on the oral form of the same med at a different dosage but he still has symptoms. Unfortunately the system is setup to be reactive versus proactive so as far as the providers actually trying to figure things out proactively they wait until it is too late.

70% of people with schizophrenia will never realize that they are ill, it's a condition called anosognosia- a lack of insight. In order to treat them, one has to make sure they get their medication, covertly if needed, and engage them in talk therapy which should build trust. Many people with mental health issues don't recognize the symptoms in themselves. As their support system it's our responsibility to recognize the behavior and get it addressed. It gets tough when your loved one is uncooperative because if the are an adults they are within their rights to refuse treatment unless they hurt themselves or somebody else. Sending you lots of support and healing energy to your family 💕

That is the problem. Some think there’s not a problem so they refuse meds and treatment. Not realizing that they could possibly live a normal life. By normal, I mean hold down a job, take care of themselves. It’s hard when you’re trying to help and they will not help themselves because they cannot mentally understand.

Lack of resources is definitely the real issue. Most people have to work and try to care for people with debilitating mental illness. Plus full time care is extremely costly and more expensive than most can afford which leaves the burden on family. I’m glad Taye’s sister had a great outcome but he also had the finances to get here whatever care is required.

Unfortunately, the disease plays out differently for a lot of people - same disease but different outcomes. I am happy to hear he gives his sister full support and she is thriving but I my experience of being the caretaker for someone with this horrible disease was a nightmare daily. I was making sure the person was taking their meds and going to therapy but I had to sleep with one eye open and the other closed. I had to make sure I had a safety plan in place for myself first then put in plan in place for the person with the disease. I was scared all the time I had no help from family or friends. The illness kepted me isolated and made me depress. I do feel like we need to have more talks on mental illness - it's so needed.

You describe a very common very stressful situation. We had to lock a family member out of another family members home because that person has nighttime rages and was entering that home. Other family members became angry at us and a rift developed that has not healed. But it was a question of safety and we could not, would not compromise that . The family member refuses treatment of any kind.

God bless everyone who is a caretaker… I feel like, sadly, the best education is living through it with that person… My mom has Bipolarism. So, instead of learning of the typical interpersonal experiences of childhood to teenage years, I was having the most up close learning experience of my mom’s Bipolarism: seeing the impending spirals, learning triggers, learning how to prevent triggers, learning how to extend the good times of stability, and learning to have a very thick skin. Also, seeing the delusion and grandiose thinking. Dreading the poor decision making when unstable… In my mid-twenties, like a dance, I shifted into the position of the unofficial caretaker. Never acknowledged. Just stepping up to do 80% of everything for her besides baths, although not physically disabled. Just not showering for weeks when in depression mode. I am all that she has because her family does not have the understanding of mental illness nor the patience. However, her siblings have or are struggling with some form of mental illness too. Just my mom’s is more obvious in manic episodes.

They also need to talk about what increases the risk of this happening and how it can be prevented. People are going to be upset with me but marijuana is one such cause. People encourage you to smoke it, but they don't know that it increases the risk of mental health issues especially when there is a history of mental illness in the family. He is absolutely right- you have to be patient and supportive. Kudos to him for showing that level of care for his sister and for talking about it, because the stigma is so so harmful- to both the person diagnosed and the relatives.

The use of marijuana can definitely increase the risk of schizophrenia. What a lot of people don’t understand is that everyone has a gene that cause schizophrenia. Usually a traumatic event causes the gene to become active and no longer remain dormant. I have two adult children that have schizophrenia. Both also have type 1 diabetes so there are studies being done to see if there is a link between that and schizophrenia. But I have done so much research and I came across multiple studies that suggest there is a link between marijuana use and schizophrenia specifically. Genetics can also play a role. Sometimes it skips multiple generations and then boom it hits.

I loved it when the interviewer spoke about people of color talking about mental health and used the term "we". Which means she included herself as a person of color instead of trying to pass.

I think the stigma behind this diagnosis is really because of those who don’t take their medication. This video confirms that if properly taken, those diagnosed can live a normal and healthy life. Thank you for spreading the word Taye and I’m so proud of your sister 🫶🏼

I have a friend who was diagnosed with this and it is not always as manageable especially when the individual is in denial about the form of mental illness. Behaviors can be mentally and emotionally destructive. I pray one day my friend will one day get the help she truly needs. So not everyone will have this positive outcome.

I grew up watching this actor. he so sweet. My baby sister went through this. basically, over night she started hearing voices. This was very traumatic for the whole family. My mum spent the whole 2 months in hospital sleeping beside her. It is common of young people before 25 to happen . So keep an eye on your loved ones. She is on medication now is doing well. She had really low b12. Please keep your eye on loved ones.

I agree with Taye. Research is key. For many years I have heard people refer to other people as "crazy" and leaving it at that. With proper diagnoses families can learn the proper tools to help support these individuals instead of putting them under the "crazy" umbrella and leaving them there.

70% of people with schizophrenia will never realize that they are ill and need help. It's a condition called anosognosia- a lack of insight. Once I realized this then I was finally able to help My mom with her schizophrenia. You have to intervene at some point, u can't wait for them to ask for help because it will never happen.

I had this same experience with my daughter who has schizophrenia. She jumped up and randomly got on a bus to Las Vegas and had no place to go and no friends or family there. We hadn’t heard from her and she hasn’t touched her SSI money that was in her account. We filed a missing persons report and a few weeks later we were told they found her sleeping on the streets with the other homeless people. She had a home but her schizophrenia made her believe she needed to leave her home. Unfortunately, she is still there and homeless. It’s so unfortunate and sad.

@@michelleb8559 Yeah; my mom with schizophrenia use to run off but I am very over-protective in general. Some people do not have the patience to always run after their loved one. I had lost my dad so I do whatever I can to hold on to my mom. She has been so good to me and she is such a sweet, kind, and generous person. She has a good heart when she is not manic.

As long as my sister took her meds, she could manage. Eventually, we lost her whereabouts. She ultimately convinced herself that meds, food, and water was poison. She starved herself to death, alone in a hotel. She was in her mid forties.😢

This is a very hard condition to handle when you have a love one that battles with this mental illness. It has its ups and downs. The meds stopped working for my sister over time. The Drs had to change meds on a regular basis because the meds stop working after so long. The illness can cause patients to become dangerous. My sister put a pot of water on the stove 😢waited for it to boil 😢and through it on my Mom. that is one of the most serious things that she had done. 😢 Blessings to his family for better days ahead.

Am glad he did not hide her because a lot of family are suffering hiding an in denial i had watch this movie with Lin Withfield good movie because if people act knowledge the mental sickness we would have less abusive relationship in many cases if the person dont take med they can become muderous or dislusion not all case but with help an family support they can live its so sad that a lot of family's dont acknowledge the sickness or they give up on them

I'm happy that her condition is manageable. However, it's important to note that mental illnesses come in many shades and sizes. Some have the lighter form, while others suffer terribly on the extreme opposite. If those people have access to care, then things can be managed, but in most cases, they don't, resulting in a person ending up homeless and worse. There are so many people homeless or in prison who literally suffer from mental illness.

This will go over so many people heads. You’re 💯 correct. Schizophrenia and mental illness is so misunderstood and those that don’t experience it first hand could never and will never understand how difficult it is trying to get them help. The system is setup to be reactive versus proactive so until they do something as a result they will suffer, become homeless, jobless and so on. Their loved ones suffer as well. You can petition the courts but what they require to do so is unreasonable and unrealistic.
