Timothy Bottoms was one of my first crushes. He is a phenomenal actor who IMHO is underrated and I'd love to see more of his work. He's so well spoken and I love listening to him tell stories of his life on the ranch and about his brother Sam, whose work I loved as well (especially in "The Outlaw Josey Wales.") So sad a loss. Thank you for putting this out here.

I remember him in The Paper Chase. I was a teenager and thought he was the most handsome guy, with long curly hair/high cheekbones and a sweet smile. He looked like a good-natured version of Jim Morrison. I lived in S.B. for 7 years and never knew he was originally from there. He's an excellent actor and wondered why he didn't go on in more films then he did. It's nice seeing him again all these years later, and observing how soft spoken and mellow he is. Didn't know about his brother's demise. Drugs have destroyed so many lives, but it looks like Timothy Bottoms is peacefully content - living life on his own terms.

Great actor. I never understood why he didn't become a huge star. In her memoirs, Cloris Leachman said he was a very sensitive soul and couldn't handle the whole Hollywood deal.

oh yes! you are pretty right! Mrs Leacman knew very well about the sensitive character of Timothy.

"ROLLERCOASTER" 1977 movie. Just aired on The Movie Network here in Montreal. Had always wanted to see this movie in the theater when I was a kid...the movie had the big "gimmick" SENSURROUND :-) . So after seeing the movie just now, I decided to see what Timothy Bottoms has been upto, and VOILA here I am watching this amazing interview with him. Kirk..in Montreal

This was nice to see Timothy Bottoms being interviewed, just sad it was about his younger brother Sam, who tragically died far too early...R.I.P Sam .. I watched Operation Daybreak yesterday and cried like a baby, and full of anger to, as this was a true story and so heartbreaking !

Timothy Bottoms is an incredible actor. Love and Pain And The Whole Damn Thing was apparently a box office flop, yet is up there in my five top fave films of all time. If you ever interview Timothy Bottoms again, can you ask him about what it was like shooting this movie. Also I read it took a couple of years to be released. And what happened with his career., why did his career suddenly nose dive. He talked in an interview about doing drugs in the 70s. Was that it? And that he was hanging out at the playboy mansion, bet he has a few stories there too. It just seems like his career should have shone much brighter. Maybe life works out how it's supposed to and he likes the solitude of living on the ranch that he obviously adores. I liked his honesty about The Last Picture Show behind the scenes stuff too. Timothy should do an auotbiography. I think it would be an interesting read.

Love all this back history. So sad to hear about Sam as I just watched the, "Last Picture Show". As a native Californian I love to see these guys in the 60's, 70's and 80's that had some money to buy property.here in California. It's interesting to me how brothers years apart can be so close. My dad was was a good ten years apart from his brother and where so close, only his younger brother also died young. Thank you for sharing this.

I felt like I was sitting in the room just a listening in. What a nice personal peek. I love the naturalness of Tim. Not that it matters one way or the other, but, I cannot help but wonder if he knew prior that there would be a camera rolling on the chat or was told afterward. I guess he must have known. Sad to hear about his brother ... reminds me that all of us have to deal with so much loss in life and nobody is immune to it.

Thanks for posting this interview. Brings back memories. I probably wasn't real popular with Mr. Bottoms. I was on the BLM crew that surveyed his property in the early 2000's, and if I recall he was not real pleased at our presence at first. I enjoyed that survey and enjoyed meeting Mr Bottoms. Great and beautiful country!

I just watched the last picture show and when they ran the credits I saw Sam Bottoms and I thought they had the name wrong. So I looked it up and Sam was in the movie with Clint Eastwood which I remember. I was like "That's Timothy Bottoms brother?" Their entire family is very talented.

Isn't Tim the same actor who played the father in the 90s remake of the tv series Land of the Lost?

to me, timothy bottoms as sonny crawford is even greater than james dean as jett rink, cal trask or jim stark.

the last picture show is my second all time favorite film. timothy bottoms as sonny crawford is my second all time favorite male movie character. his performance as sonny is more moving to me than even james dean as jim stark or cal trask. what larry McMurtry did to sonny's character in texasville the novel and since then was the only misstep that the author has ever made concerning treatment of one of his characters. sonny is the heart and soul of picture show. sonny should have been a major character in texasville. sonny is much more interesting than duane. duane is a one note character who is hot headed and impulsive and nothing else. McMurtry's shift in the character of duane from picture show to texasville is not natural. it does not ring true. sure people change (some what any way) or the course of 30 years, but the duane who shows up in texasville is entirely a different person. i wish McMurtry would re-visit sonny and write several novellas about the character : one that transpires prior to picture show, one that transpires shortly after picture show, one in the early 60's, one in the late 60's and one in the 70's prior to texasville.

Great comment!!! I think that you are pretty right! And that is why I will never see Texasville! Never! Writter, Screenwritter and director maked a terrible injury about Sonny character, who is the soul of Last Picture...and, by the way...The fact about Jeff Bridges was nominated for his simple and ordinary role and Bottoms did not nominated for his deep, and brilliant role...was terrible...Absolutely terrible.
@johnrunion53578 жыл бұрын
tequiness061 i have heard two different stories about the writing of the novel texasville. one story is McMurtry wrote as he did simply because he found duane had more possibilities than sonny. i have also read that he wrote the novel with the film in mind. bridges was now a bigger star and was given a much larger role. director bogdanovich had had problems during the shooting of picture show since the director was having an affair with cybil shepard and bottoms was also in love with her. at one point the director and the actor quarreled resulting in the actor running up on the director and grabbing bogdanovich by the shirt throwing bogdanovich against a wall. sonny is a much more deep and soulful character than the one note duane. i know that people change in time, but the duane in texasville (set 30 years later) is in no way similar to the duane of picture show. the duane in picture show was basically a hot head. in texasville he was made into an every man type character. no one writes characters as well as McMurtry, but his one misstep out of his novels that i have read is when he demoted sonny in favor of duane. bottoms as sonny is a performance that has moved me even more than james dean in east of eden or rebel without a cause.

+John Runion Yes...you are pretty right...I have readed about the polemic between Bottoms&Bogdanovich and well, Cloris Leachman said about Timothy that he is very sensitive and she thought that the young actor was rebel about the show bussiness industry, you know...If you want to get something...you must to "see, hear and...shut up" and Bottons did not make it when he saw Bogdanovich infidelity...Bottoms had a lot of respect for wife-director, who was even pregnant when the Shepherd one, was between the Bogdanovich marriage. The director got very unger with Tim.. who was from divorced parents...About Sonny...oh man, Do you really believe about writer explanations?? I think Sonny character is gold for working about him. A character who really can takes changes in time...more than Duane. But...Duane-Bridges...got more relevance in industry...and simply, working about him... was more easy for making money , for writer and producer. What a pitty...

tequiness061 i have also heard that timothy's parents were going through the divorce while filming on picture show was about to begin and that sam bottoms had to go live with timothy during that time. thank you for your heart felt and thoughtful comments/replies.
