I love to seek out travel places and roadside attractions in America. I always remember going to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, some where around 1970, I was 7 or eight years old at the time, and when I climbed into what I vaguely remember as being a early Mercury capsule that they had on display, one that had been in orbit around the earth, at some point. Even at that young age I was thinking to myself that I couldn't believe that somebody was stupid enough to ride in that thing more than 10 feet off of the ground. My moms' 1969 Volkswagen beetle seemed more technologically advanced. The wiring was knob and tube and all exposed . Later in life I realized the genius of that in that if there was a problem with a short or a fire that the astronauts could locate the problem quickly and reroute the circuit with minimal delay. I always chuckle when I read a few years ago that the Apollo 11 space ship had the computer capability of a Tickle Me Elmo Doll.

It is definitely amazing what the space program accomplished in the 60s with the technology at their disposal. I once heard that the Apollo's guidance computer had less computing capacity than a modern cell phone.

Great video! I also have not been to the Museum of Science and Industry since the early to mid 80s. I share your dislike of flying, mostly because I’m pretty tall and the lack of leg room is very uncomfortable. I’m no longer living in the Chicago area but I’m gonna have to get back to the museum some day…

It's definitely worth checking out. The last time I was there, my dad took me into the submarine, but I've never been in the coal mine.
