This was some of their “fixes” we all knew that would happen for “modern audiences” Sokkas “woke” removal of his attitude is the worst about his character. The original show constantly shows it to be something sokka needs to grow out of, and it keeps challenging him to do so. His ingrained assumptions of there being “natural” assignment of mens and womens roles ultimately gets him humbled. His assumptions of the kyoshi warriors having to have been men, calling their practice “dance lessons” only for them to beat him every time. Even though he’s emasculated by putting on the “dress” and makeup, it’s something he consciously chooses to still do in order to learn to fight from them. This completely underscores his jaded concept of there being masculine and feminine roles and changes his worldview by showing they are not separate, and most importantly that they’re not opposing. You can be both. Which is why suki says “I’m a warrior, but I’m a girl too” after she kisses him. The fact that he gets on his knees and asks suki to teach him, and suki says “even if im a girl?” just shows the importance of his arc. If someone doesn’t think that’s great story telling and an interesting story, I don’t know what is.

Let’s think about that awesome woman from Terminator! She starts as a fast food worker and giggles and is acting like a girl. Then bam, the robot comes back and starts killing anyone with her name and right before she gets killed the human who came back saves her. Give her a bit of time and bam she’s kicking ass. The second movie comes out and she is super strong and tactful in combat! That was the 80’s! So yeah, we had female heroes for a while now, but they had to work for it (like any human would need to do to become stronger)! @tahlia__nerds_out8 ай бұрын
@@jesuspernia8031 It’s frustrating because it’s ruining both villains and heroes. The villain is not outstanding, so the heroes aren’t forced to be outstanding to defeat him. A watered-down villain doesn’t seem like a true threat to our heroes and they don’t have to challenge themselves to become better or learn new skills because the villain is just so sad and sympathetic, don’t you know. They’re actually the ones bullying him, those nasty heroes. 🙄 Okay, it’s not usually that bad, but it’s come close. Ex: I really didn’t want or need a sympathetic story about the Joker that makes him seem like a victim. What does that make Batman then, other than a guy who beats on poor mentally ill people? Changing the villain too far in the direction of being sympathetic runs the definite risk of making the hero less so. Zuko’s Agnai-Kai (sp?) and Katara’s fight against Azula is amazing because so much work was put into making her a dangerous and powerful foe before she started her downward spiral. Aing’s fight against Ozai was highly anticipated and felt like the stakes were so high because they *were.* Ozai’s ruthlessness and unbridled ambition made him seem like an unbeatable foe for the peaceful, spiritual, and fun-loving Aing. If Ozai was conflicted, Aing would have tried to reach him (like he did with Zuko) to avoid crossing a line he really didn’t want to cross. But because Ozai was so unreachable, so *unconflicted,* Aing was forced to consider what lengths he was willing to go to in order to stop Ozai’s determination to conquer all the other kingdoms and destroy anyone who dared to resist. Netflix’s attempt to add nuance to an already amazing villain created a ripple affect that couldn’t help but adversely affect the story and all the other characters around him. As much as Avatar: The Last Airbender is about a group of kids learning to transform themselves into the heroes they need to be, it’s as much about a ruthless foe who is willing to go to any length to feed his unbridled ambition. Netflix missed the point.

I agree with everything said. I describe everything wrong with the show's new altered story as the "sticky note" method of writing. Imagine all the characters, plot lines, world building, conflicts, etc. as individual sticky notes on a wall that are arranged in sequence according to the original animated series. Basically the writers decided to shuffle and layer a bunch of these sticky notes together to rearrange them, while giving off the illusion that they maintained the original stories structure. Unfortunately, yeah, the showrunners don't get why the series was sequenced the way that it was. Show-Don't-Tell was absurdly not understood by these new writers. For example, with the Hei Bai story, another big part of that plot is that Hei Bai is terrorizing the local village, he kidnaps Sokka after retreating during the first fight, and that's what leads Aang to the Spirit World. AND that leads to Aang meeting Roku's dragon and learning that he has to find the Fire Temple. In contrast, the showrunners have Katara and Sokka get "accidentally" dragged into the Spirit World with Aang while investigating the forest. So you can see how this new series doesn't understand how the stakes from the original series build ontop of one another.

12:30 In the original show, everyone (especially Iroh) is horrified that Zhao would do something as extreme as killing the moon spirit, just to win one battle. But it fits Zhao's character - he'll do anything to win, even if it backfires on him (like the time Aang tricks him into burning his own ships). Azula is much too smart to even think about trying something like that, so making it her idea ruins her character as well as Zhao's.
@nicholastaylor96878 ай бұрын
Did they ever state that it was Azula's plan to kill the Moon Spirit? Zhao reveled it was Azula who was backing him but I'm pretty sure it was never said killing the Moon Spirit was her idea. Zhao even says he is doing it to make a bid to become fire Lord, if Azula had even a hint his ambitions were that high she would have gotten rid of him. She can't be firelord if Zhao is.

One would argue that it’s not “one battle,” but the complete domination of the Waterbenders as a whole. Which is significant, given that they are the elemental opposite of the Fire Nation and could pose a major hurdle, especially if they combined their forces with the Earth Kingdom, something they hadn’t committed to, yet. That said, this would have had drastic consequences that would have thrown the entire planet into chaos, down the line. It is absolutely insane and arrogant of Zhao to believe he can control or kill the Moon Spirit and think that the Fire Nation wouldn’t feel that impact.

Animation has freedom to use over top character emotion and actions that are uncanny when used in live action so must be dialed back. When that is dialed back, something is lost that was an important factor in making the animated story so popular. When it comes to costuming, IMO, it is important to not copy the animation directly but to capture the spirit of the costume. Take for example Captain America. Marvel nailed it making his movie costume have the spirit of the comics, but not be spandex. The Ahsoka show however I feel was held back by making the costumes mimic the cartoon far too much. Cartoony costumes and behaviors make any serious tone very difficult to pull off in live action.

7:57 This is as far as I got before I realized that I was correct to assume the worst when the original show runners left. Azula may have actual mental disorders but a part of why she is the way she is was because Ozai rewarded it. He put her in positions of power and let her work with impunity because she was his pride and joy. She mirrored the twisted, violent, and ambitious mind of her father and it really did seem like such a… wholesome?… kind of villain child relationship. By making Azula second fiddle you undercut not only her presence in the story, her open intimidation factor as the next generation of danger, but also her role in Zuko’s life. His little sister was always mocking him, berating him, beating him at literally everything, and when it came time for his banishment, there were those that continued to look down on him as a humiliation to his family. Not just for the scar but because he was the only apple that fell far from the tree. By flipping that one dynamic alone you ruin two characters completely.

@haku81358 ай бұрын
@@thecensoredmuscle563 It's really not a stretch. She's consistently shown to be smarter in basically every way, she's a MUCH better firebender and physical strength just doesn't matter, they're firebenders not boxers, she can generate lightning despite her young age, she's several years younger than Zuko but has always been considerably ahead of him in talent, she's far better at politics, she's an extremely skilled manipulator which is a highly valued skill IN politics, she's demonstrated to be a better tactician in both military and small squad situations. Like sure, we don't see their math scores, but Azula is shown at EVERY turn to just be BETTER than Zuko. Hell, she and her group of 2 other people finessed ALL the Kyoshi warriors in straight combat, and Azula shows she is VERY skilled at just straight combat, even if she holds her bending back. Suki came at her with a sword and Azula just slapped that shit away. Again, this is what their FATHER said TO Zuko. Azula was born lucky, Zuko was lucky to be born. He is considered a failure, worthless, he was banished for speaking out of turn, Ozai was just LOOKING for a chance to get rid of him. If you're good at everything BUT firebending, you don't GET that reaction from your father and the RULER of your country. That's Zuko's journey. He SUCKS. He's a LOSER. He's the DREGS of the fire nation. Iroh has him practicing FUNDAMENTALS in episode one. At SIXTEEN. He's incredibly weak as a bender and over the course of his journey he grows and becomes powerful, but he also becomes a better person. Zuko at the final episode and Zuko in episode 1 are basically 2 totally different people.

@user-qv9ch7df4l and your point? Korra was never meant to be the same the last air bender...if u don't like the show fine but not everyone like the last air bender also so chill because what u said had nothing to do with my comment anyway

@@alexanderwilliamson7375 I’m saying the show wouldn’t have been any better with the original creators on the team that was the whole point of the statement, they where trying to do even more changes than the live action did it would’ve been worse

@user-qv9ch7df4l well we don't know that for sure

The last four or three episodes were ONLY ABOUT THE SAME THING: “the avatar must walk alone” and that’s not even focused till the end of book 2 to the start of book 3 for gods sake.
