It wasn't just sports, they also did photos of the seniors in performing arts and hung the banners in our auditorium, and even some kids that won math/science awards got their faces on a big banner in the common area. We had a shop with a banner printer, they probably just wanted to use it. It was definitely kind of weird, but also kind of cool to see your friend's face up on a giant poster, celebrating something they did. Makes the nebulous idea of "success" seem a little more attainable, which I think was a big help for kids who are about to leave public schools and deal with the real world for the first time. (I did always feel like the sports ones were the most cringy)
