I recently bought a Milwaukee 2967 1/2” impact gun and a heavy mass 19mm impact socket made for this purpose. Came off in less than 3 seconds. In our shop before this socket was available, we would use a crank pulley holder tool, then a Snap-on breaker bar with a Jack handle for leverage. A few times it actually took 2 guys (over 6-footer) to break the crank bolt loose.

i dont comment on many youtube videos or problems but this honda crank bolt issue really P**** me off, i had a bit of advantage as my k20 was on a stand and the stand was secured to the floor so i could get closer too the bolt for leverage, i spent 2 days with pry bars and cheater bars and even with a 550nm rattle gun but no joy!. i did notice with all the videos on youtube including this one all had the same issue with tooling, the tools used like breaker bars and extention sockets all had far to much give/play in them so the energy was being lost through the tools before getting to the bolt, so after 2 days i just had enough and done a bit more research and found this solution that worked almost instantly. there is a socket on the market for harmonic crank bolts which is about 4x the mass of any impact socket but this alone was not enough, various videos suggested a high inpact gun so after a bit of research i bought the dewalt 899 which has 1650nm of breakawat torque :), i tried the impact gun along with a short impact socket but again it failed, i then tried the harmonic socket with the dewalt and within 3 seconds on power 3 with a full battery is spun off, the whole gun/socket and battery cost a fair bit in the UK but it done the job and now know there is not another bolt on a car the gun will not remove :) just thought i would share my experience with this dreaded bolt.

Yup it works. What it does because of the extra "weight" in the socket, it will cause an extra "hammering" effect causing the bolt to break. There's 2 styles, both are good. Especially if you have an Earthquake impact, even with a Bauer. Just make sure the battery is fully charged.

I just broke the crankshaft pulley bolt loose on my 2008 Honda Fit! I used a "3:1 Torque Multiplier ($257 new on Amazon)" and the crank pulley holding tool ($13). I ran a bunch of 1/2" extensions out from the multiplier and rested them on a jack stand and used a breaker bar with a 4 ft. cheater pipe on it and it broke loose. Even though the torque multiplier is rated for 1100 ft/lbs, I still had to put out on that cheater pipe. My 450 ft/lb. electric impact with the special crankshaft 19mm socket from Honda was not enough to break it loose.

@plumkey1974 жыл бұрын
I used the starter on a Ford Escort that had a water pump that was driven by the timing belt. I really don't see the danger neither, because it worked well and didn't damage anything. I've seen a couple vids where this method was attempted on a J series Honda and the starter wasn't able to bump and break it loose, even after 2 attempts. I'm in the middle of doing the timing belt and water pump on a 97 CRV, and getting ready to use heat. Already tried 2 air and 2 electric impacts with the lisle giant socket, days of PB Blaster, transmission and acetone mixed half and half, hammering with a punch, and some creative use of the worst vulgarity I've picked up over the decades. I've already had issues with the motor mounts and put so much torque on the front torque mount that the mounting bolt broke free from the engine rather than the front nut. I was able to remove it and the bolt was still good, but the broken mount was still attached and the nut still needed to come off. I got pissed and got my angle grinder and you know the rest. The nut is a couple dollars. I can't do that with the crank bolt and the starter can't be used because the engine spins counter-clockwise. And my breaker bars are Harbor Freight specials also. I'm gonna need all the luck I can find. When heat is used, you must crank on it within seconds of heating it - preferably while still red-hot - or it won't work. Learned this while I worked for a valve company as a rebuilder. These valves would come in with Lord only knows what kind of chemicals flowing through them, and some of the most corroded fasteners I've ever seen. Just hope this propane cylinder will get hot enough. I'm also gonna take a brass wire brush and attempt to get behind the washer and scrape some of that crud out so the oil can get back there and soak in. Thanks for posting your odyssey with the crank bolt. If u r interested i'll video my efforts if I can find a way to set up my phone.

I am surprised this fellow borrowed a neighbor's SK breaker bar. If he had broken that it would have been expensive to replace, You can;'t depend on Sk warranty any more, they are made in China now. The solution is a high grade impact gun. I bit the bullet and bought a Milwaukee 1/2" impact gun that is rated at 1400 ft-lbs of torque. I also used the lysle 19mm part # 77080 socket. That combination took that bolt off in less than 10 seconds of hammering. Please don't use heat. After that you may need to replace the crank seal.
