Inflammation : Pathology
-----------------------------------------
Inflammation is a fundamental pathological response of the body to injury or infection, characterized by redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function. It serves as a protective mechanism aimed at eliminating the initial cause of cell injury, clearing out necrotic cells and tissues, and establishing an environment for healing and repair. The inflammatory process involves a complex interplay of vascular, cellular, and molecular events.
Vascular changes include vasodilation and increased permeability, allowing immune cells, particularly neutrophils and macrophages, to migrate to the site of injury. These cells release cytokines and chemokines, which orchestrate the inflammatory response by attracting more immune cells and mediating local and systemic effects.
Chronic inflammation, resulting from persistent injury or infection, or dysregulation of the normal inflammatory response, can lead to tissue damage and contribute to various diseases, including atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer.
Understanding the mechanisms of inflammation is essential for developing therapeutic strategies to modulate this response and treat inflammatory diseases.
