Thanks for these two video's on the Battle of Seven Pines. I grew up about a mile from the Grapevine Bridge (on the Hanover side of the river) so naturally I have a real interest in the events of those days. So this is basically the battle that sets up the entire second half of the war: it leads to Lee being put in charge of the main Confederate Army and subsequently becoming a hero for defending the Captal, and on the other side it leads to McClellan dithering further and being subsequently fired after sad dithering allows Lee to launch his offensive.

As someone who lives in the area, I can confirm that it is, indeed, a mud bog every single time it rains around here. The area is relatively flat with only a few outlets for the water to drain. As a result, you either have it pool up into large puddles that take a few days to completely drain or it runs off rapidly into torrents, turning what would normally be dry ground look like a River.

My sincere condolences for your loss. It's so hard to think that, in that horrible War, at least at some points during the War, Brother fought against Brother, Son fought against Father...and my question is:How does one get away from the tragic memories of situations like that? I remember visiting the Antietam Battlefield...and in the midst of my visit, a Thunderstorm hit. But there was something else. As it started to rain, I was overwhelmed by this terrible sadness that nearly made me cry....and why not? Thinking about that terrible War, and as to how death, sometimes between even close friends and family members, were the results of fate, that saw them on opposite sides of that War, and having to kill, or be killed, even by someone that they loved, tears at me to this day, when I think about it. May that kind of Warfare never happen here in the United States of America, ever again! I live in Virginia, in Staunton, and I have to admit:If I would've fought in the Civil War, I would've fought for the South. Even though our side lost the Civil War, it took the Union nigh on 4 years to totally defeat our Brave Men, and look at the what-for that our Men gave those Union Forces! No disrespect meant toward the Union, but they should've just left us alone!

In my relentless quest to perfect my dislike of Gen John Brinton McClellan, his ad-homonym attack upon Casey's Troops has been a particular gem. Mac leaked his condemnation to the newspapers before learning the facts; but that was a usual fault of the Great Man. I'm currently reading the reports from this battle, and your presentations are like having a Professor standing right in front of me to clarify. Love, David

McClellan sits there for 3 weeks? Really? Did he even have a plan on the drawing board? I guess if he only wants bloodless victories, he faces a difficult task
@WarhawkYT3 жыл бұрын
Who else but McClellan!
@michaelmccabe30793 жыл бұрын
Hopefully McClellan will spend those 3 weeks improving his rear infrastructure at least! The inability to rapidly reinforce any of his corps commanders should have been first on his mind when adopting a defensive posture. Being destroyed in detail is no fun, and a battle like this would reveal that weakness.
@ronaldshank75892 жыл бұрын
@@WarhawkYT Gen. McClellan was one of the WORST Generals in the entire Union Army. Period! The only one that was worse than Gen. McClellan, was Gen. Burnside. He unnecessarily wasted countless thousands of Union Forces, in one failed assault after another, against a very well-fortified Confederate position, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, in December of 1862. The Confederates were well-positioned behind a huge, and very strong and solid, stone wall. It was a Turkey Shoot. The Union Forces were, in a large part, mowed down by the Confederate Forces hidden behind that stone wall. Add to that an excellent display of Artillery Fire, which was orchestrated by a Confederate Officer, by the last name of Pelham. The Confederate Forces, working in tandem with each other, made relatively short work of the Union Forces. Fredericksburg is a Confederate Victory. It wasn't even close! There was no way that the Confederates were going to lose that Battle!!!

@ronaldshank75892 жыл бұрын
@@mikhailiagacesa3406 McClellan quite simply cannot be counted as a good Commander. No way! He knew how to fight, but he let his own fears get the best of him. He moved way too slowly, and the Confederates knew it, and quite apparently knew where and when to strike.
@ronaldshank75892 жыл бұрын
The Civil War would've quite possibly been over by the end of 1862, if not sooner. After Shiloh, people wanted President Lincoln to get rid of General Grant. Lincoln responded:"I can't spare this Man. He fights"!

@hvymettle2 жыл бұрын
Johnston did a poor job communicating his battle plan to his subordinates. The plan, such as it was, was not horrible, but poorly executed at a bloody cost with little gain. However one may feel about Longstreet, he clearly screwed the pooch at Seven Pines and blamed it on Huger with Johnston covering Longstreet's ass in his official report.
