General Johnston received an injury in a duel that left his leg numb sometimes. That is probably the reason why he was not worried about the wound on his leg as he probably didnt feel it all that much. (great videos my man.)

My 3rd great grandfather was a Pvt in the 22nd Mississippi Co K "Pegue's Defenders" named Albert Monroe Johnston. (It is currently not known or understood if he was of any relation to the General Albert Sidney Johnston, as his father Abel was also from Kentucky. Genealogy in Kentucky is difficult to track beyond the 1790s, only know that his grandfather William Johnston gained bounty land for revolutionary veterans in Green County in 1786) I was happy to see the 22nd MS correctly identified besides the 15th in the main center of the battle on the left flank of Statham's Brigade. Others in his unit when writing to a Scurry County, TX judge in support of his pension mentioned Gen Johnston riding along the front of the line with his saber in hand clanking their bayonets and encouraging men forward across the field and peach orchard because one or two units refused to line up for another attack out of complaint of total exhaustion. This brigade had originally been in the reserve at the open of the battle and didn't get to participate in the plundering of Prentiss' camps. They were near starving at this point as many hadn't eaten a proper meal since leaving Corinth three days prior, but were inspired and motivated to continue fighting probably in no small part from the Gen's encouragements. My ancestor survived all the major action in the center of the Battle of Shiloh as well as the decisive Union counterattack the next day. But the Siege and the later 2nd Battle of Corinth were much worse on him.

I'm very glad you mentioned the difficulty of the terrain and how it affected the fighting. Several years ago I spent some time in the backcountry of this area and the foliage was incredibly dense (often impassable in places). It was difficult just to hike around, I could hardly imagine trying to fight a battle in that place. Respect to the toughness of those soldiers on both sides.

I've always found it fascinating how this battle shaped so many careers for the Union. Shiloh pretty much made Sherman and Steven Hurlbut. Before this battle, Hurlbut, who had been considered to be a drunken lecher and who owed his command largely to his relationship with Abraham Lincoln, was pretty much a laughingstock. By the end of it, his troops had completely reversed their opinions of him. W.H.L Wallace, who was already a rising star in the army, and a favorite of Grant's probably would have risen far, had he not been killed in combat. LEW Wallace on the other hand, was pretty much destroyed by his failure to arrive at the battlefield in a timely fashion. The controversy over whether he was deliberately negligent or merely unlucky still rages among historians. McClernand, who had been with Grant since before Belmont performed solidly enough and like Sherman rose to corps command in the coming months. Prentis probably got the rawest deal (other than WHL Wallace) since he was captured and wasn't exchanged until October that year. His career got sidelined when he refused to vote to convict Fitzjohn Porter and he was transferred Arkansas-where he later won the small but strategically important battle of Helena, on the same day Vicksburg surrendered to Grant and Lee began withdrawing from Gettysburg.

Is it just me or do the rebs have a pattern of carrying out catastrophically ill-advised and tactically unsound frontal attacks against superior enemy positions for either no reason at all or due to C&C-breakdowns? I mean, bypassing enemy strongpoints is a pretty well-worn military maxim. But the CSA seems to do the opposite on a regular basis. What does this say anything about their army and their leadership?

Just saying your missing some units. 1st illinois battery A was positioned right on the bloody pond the left of the hornets nest. They lost several guns horses and a few men I believe. The illinois battery aka 1st chicago light artillery doing historical reenactments and living history had used an original gun from the original battery. I remember firing it with live ammo at a out door range to this day that 6ibs bronze gun is accurate. It also had graffiti from the OGs of the battery on the back of the gun and Shiloh was visible as day as others were scribbed on it. Island no. 10 being one. Corinth vicksburg. It was awesome to be part of that living history unit

An excellent video, both in terms of information and graphics. One question: at 23:00, in Gibson's 1st Brigade, the second unit in the line (between what is (I think) the 4th LA and the 1st AR) is colored blue. What happened there?

I appreciate your work on describing battles of the American Civil War that interests me a lot. If I may add some criticism - it isn't not meant as discouragement. . . . When you mention units, left and right wings, and cardinal directions, it would be good to see them marked on the map. Or I have to step back in my mind to figure out which was left and right for the which army and where the unit was now exactly. . . . You mention every unit and every commander in full. You maybe want to use this to differentiate from others: for me, it makes the narrative both monotonous and too full of non-essentials. Yes, during the battle, the names are important for the internal commands of the army, but afterwards, they remain mostly interested for writer of regimental history, not the war itself. As a rule, I would describe an army as it was important for the enemy.

I see the Confederate blocks have different colors, some grey, some buttermilk, some light blue, some as blue as the Union... is that due to the haphazard uniform situation for the Confederates? To show which color was more prominent in each regiment? Just wondering as I see some Union blue colors in the Confederate lines.
@WarhawkYT
@WarhawkYT 3 жыл бұрын
yes we base the colors off the most used color of the uniform in the regiment. these assortment of colors caused confusion among both sides.
