Sinterklaas Arrives in Amsterdam

I was in the Netherlands last December and as an old man I can tell you the love you can feel at this gathering is real and the children are so very very happy and singing and jumping one little tiny tot to my left was just able to stand on her own in her pink winter suit as her father watched over her she would raise her arms up and jump up and down and then fall on her backside Father would stand her up again and she would raise her hands into the air and jump up and down and then shorty she was back on her backside...Sinterklaas was on the boat sailing into the harbor... my heart melted it was pure joy for these children and this old jaded man felt their love as the children sang .... those who find fault in this I truly feel sorry for them and what happened to them to make them that way...The little one at 1:57 and 2:08 in reminds me of the little one I saw jumping...

I used to sing the songs in school and we were taught that sinterklaas was somebody of great influence. Once I became abit older I started to realise it was a conspiracy and had nothing to do with my culture.

Hi, Could you correct the text above? Amsterdam has introduced new Petes (which aren't black but rather old Spanish). Thank you. Black Pete's are being discussed currently and Amsterdam has already made a huge shift so Zwarte Piet belongs to the past here...

mathildejansen Sure, that's fair. Last year in 2016, was the first time that the Petes appeared in the Amsterdam celebration not in full black face. We weren't sure if they were still being referred to as Zwarte Pieten or what. And we consciously chose not to discuss the issue in the video as it would have taken a whole series of episodes to explain and discuss the issue properly.

Well you share the opinion of many here and it's been a topic of huuuuuuuge debate. If you noticed in the video, the Petes don't actually have black faces...they have sooty faces (which is from coming down the chimneys). So now they are Sooty Petes instead of Black Petes. Amsterdam took this step for the first time this year to find a compromise that would still honor the folktale without being offensive. We chose not to feature this point in the video as it would take way too much time to explain in just a few seconds or minutes.. Many documentaries and news shows have been devoted to this subject. Bu thank you for mentioning it as it surely is relevant.
