Ad Infinitum - Abyss (Album Review)

It’s a bit too early but I think this might be my favorite album from them. They’ve always had a pop influenced vocal approach and the power metal nuances are still there. Sure we don’t have synth strings but we still have synth elements. They have grown as songwriters. The songs masterfully blend fun elements like synth wave, metal, and pop very well. The band likes approaching albums as concepts for story telling. They shifted from a historical story to a sci fi future based one so the texture changes make sense. Like you said you could hear some of the modern sound influence on the last record with songs like Eternal Rains and Seth. Ad Infinitum pumps out music at a really steady pace and I’m glad to see them keep putting out quality music. Melissa Bonny and the band sound better than ever.

The 'spice' analogy sums up how I feel about harsh vocals in metal. Used in moderation, they can add a lot. But make the whole song / dish from them, and that's not my cup of tea. Too many of my favourite bands with female clean and harsh vocals have been veering towards 'too much spice for my liking' direction lately, relative to their earlier music. I need to listen to more Ad Infinitum, as I'll be seeing them in 3 weeks with Blackbriar, Frozen Crown and Kamelot. I've only heard bits of their music before.

I feel like Ad Infinitum always used harsh vocals very sparingly. Hasn’t it always been 85-90% clean vocals? The singles definitely feel more pop music influenced than before but I do feel they were starting to get very slightly stale so I think it’s refreshing to hear them do something different. I really like the singles so far and even Melissa’s solo single.

True on the clean vocals but I feel like this record is even more of the cleans which I like for the band
