Adak is the westernmost city in the United States. Construction of the city began with military activity in 1942 and after Naval Air Facility of Adak was closed in 1997, the population of Adak declined from about 6000 to 100 people.

Beautifully done video. Watching it brought back a flood of memories from when I was stationed there in 1978-1979. It was a vibrant community of people making the best of an inhospitable yet beautiful place. Learned to fly fish there and enjoyed some of the freshest fish in the world. Sad to see the condition of things now.

I lived on Adak from 1991-1994 when i was 1 year old to 4 years old. My dad was the Music teacher at the school. Brought tears to my eyes to see it again in such clarity! I would love to go back one day! Thank you for the memories this brough of my truly blessed childhood and wonderful family!

I was born there in 1992 my parents were stationed there in the Navy. They ended up going back to Texas 3 months after I was born but I’ve always wanted to know of more people my age who had been there. That’s very cool about your dad being the music teacher. I would love to visit Adak again I’ve always been fascinated with it. This is a wonderful video 🙌🏼

@aubzies626 that's awesome! My little brother was born there in 1992 as well. There is something about that island that draws my soul back to it. If you want some great connection visually the show "Pirate Gold of Adak Island" on Netflix has some good footage of the island. Also some of the best Aleute history (in fiction/story form) has been the book "Alaska" by James A. Michener. I do really plan on going back sometime in the next couple years, you are more than welcome to join lol. Ps: I wonder if our parents knew each other. If you had any older siblings in school my dad would have been one of their teachers, he taught K-12 grade music.

I was truly captivated by this film, just as I have been with all of Viktor Posnov's work. The sweeping landscapes of the Northern country are simply breathtaking. This film is the perfect way to unwind and relax, especially on a rainy day when there's nothing else to do. I wholeheartedly support documentaries like Umnak, which provide valuable insights into the region's history and culture. Today, I will be premiering a film about Viktor and his incredible solo hiking adventure in East Greenland. Viktor is an inspiration to me, and I wish I had the opportunity to travel as extensively as he does.

Nothing will ever compare to your Greenland vids but that won't keep me from enjoying everything you put out ✌️👌👍🤙👏 Best wishes and thank you.

Just amazing footage. We really need a law that if the government leaves, they need to clean up their mess. Sad how they left a city to rot in an area so beautiful.

The military land was traded to the Aleut Native Corporation for lands the corporation held somewhere in the Lower 48. The Aleut Corporation assumed they could make it work for them since it had a great flightline and very good facilities. They wanted to turn it into a major commercial fishing hub and a good layover for flights crossing the Pacific. Unfortunately, because of environmental issues, fuel markets, etc., those efforts never came to fruition. To complicate matters, the Aleut Corporation was then left with lots of infrastructure they just couldn't afford to maintain. Then there was the vandalism by the kids of bored residents. I was there when the decision was made to close it. The whole decision-making process was an absolute cluster-fvck. Seems Corky Caldwell, the Dept of the Navy sent out a query asking based commanders if any bases were needed since the cold war had ended. Captain Caldwell at NAS Adak immediately fired back and said the base should be closed down ASAP. Of course he never consulted with the Commanding officers of the other bases on the island, NSGA in particular. NSGA still had missions and if nothing else we knew it was only a matter of time before we'd have to deal with China (this all went down in 1993, I was there). So the commander of all the naval aviation forces announces the base was to be closed down, without consulting the chief of naval operations or the secretary's office, It all got mixed up and nasty, so to save face and avoid looking like imbeciles Adak was kept on the list of prospective base closures that was sent to congress, who signed off on it to everybody's loss. That precipitated the rapid depopulation of the island, and a MASSIVELY lengthy and expensive environmental clean-up. Now the Department of the Navy is looking for locations for deep-water ports in Alaska with quick access to the Arctic and year-round access. For some reason they just haven't moved on this though. Probably to avoid further embarrassment to the service.

I was at NSGA from 1977-1978. I can not count how many times I have been back in dreams...SO vivid and real, and how thrilled I am. Ironic, too, because I regret so much that I never extended my tour. But I realize I would have missed the buddies and adventures I found in WESTPAC at my next tour with 7th Fleet staff out of Yokosuka, Japan. Ironic, too, because of all the people I met on Adak, one was a music teacher from my hometown, Elwood, NY, who was two years ahead in high school with me. Adak could change you in ways that never fade.

I wish I could say I remember Adak from this video, but only parts. We were stationed there from 60 to 62. I don't recognize any of the quarters we lived in as I suppose they were updated? Bering Chapel just makes me cry. I have so many good memories of church and Sunday School classes.. I would love to go back someday. This video was so well done, but it's just heartbreaking to see the condition of the island.

This is wonderful! I have a dream of being able to travel along the length of the Aleutians. I know it'll never happen (and they'd probably be shrouded in fog anyway) but your films give an insight into these unattainable places. The landscapes are magnificent, and so is the 'ruinlust' captured by all the decaying buildings and human detritus. Thank you so much for posting.

Do you plan to make in the future another documentary style video like Umnak? That was so great to watch
@ViktorPosnov
@ViktorPosnov 11 ай бұрын
Umnak was edited by @marianovska and she have uploaded a few new videos on her channel. I might consider to make new educational / adventure videos, but in case with Adak, it didn’t make much sense as it would not have that much new information or adventure part in it. Also, in oder to be able to do such videos like to Umnak consistently, they have make profits to fund next project. Right now Umnak still did not make enough money to cover the trip cost.

I was stationed in Adak in the 1970's. Such a shame H. W. Bush closed the bases there. All this money wasted. Heres my proposal for Adak. 1. House all the newly arrived illegal immigrants here. 2. Send all the homeless from California and new york. 3. Make it a drug treatment center. 4. Lease Adak to Russia or China or both ( this last option would make some money which could fund the first three options).
