It can take a very long time to dig yourself out that hole. When you numb the pain your body stops producing the feel good endorphins(dopamine) that has been replaced with whatever is doing the numbing. It can take 6 months to a year which is why so many stay in that hole. Its a long battle and it sucks.

I believe the aftermath album came out in 95 and it was so bad that Dr dre even ignored it himself in the chronic 2001 album when he said I ain't dropped a album in 10 years with would have been the chronic which was at least 3 years before the aftermath album
