Adam & Dr. Drew Show

Originally released on July 6, 2016. Guest host: Theo Von. In Drew's absence, Theo Von is sitting in for him. Adam tells the detailed story behind his departure from Loveline including how Dr. Drew was being offered roughly three times the salary that Adam was offered. Even though Adam asked Drew to meet for lunch to discuss their strategy for getting a "favoured nation" contract, he signed his contract without ever telling Adam. And while Adam says that he forgave Drew after he found out from the agent that he eventually fired, you can tell from the sound of his voice that he still resents Drew to this day. It's an interesting story that hasn't been told very often by Adam.

Drew was afraid they'd fire him too, and has some kind of pathological fear of going broke and being ruined. A fact that Adam noticed and mocked him for while they were still on Loveline together.

Dr. Drew is a legit MD, had/(maybe still)has a private practice, specialized in addiction medicine, and later became a Psychiatrist with very valuable knowledge and skills sets. There was never a possibility of Dr. Drew going broke even without a radio and TV career, other than by some freak accident like a serious head injury.

I listened to Loveline once when Adam was running late and it was just Drew by himself for about half an hour. It was pretty boring. I didn't agree with everything Adam said, but I didn't agree with everything Drew said either. Together they made for great radio. Telling Adam to take a pay CUT after years of service meant "We want you to leave." Which he did.

Adam was the most talented sidekick but his ranting was annoying and openly hostile by early 2005, Drew had been doing good radio all the way from 1983, it’s really not as clear-cut as Ace pretends

@@mckernan603 His ranting did tend to take over the show. And in the end it was really Drew's show. Drew is the one who created it and did it for free for, what, 11 years? Just as a service to troubled kids dealing with issues no one else would talk openly about.

Drew had been at the show since its inception, so they probably felt that they should reward his commitment and loyalty. Whereas Adam is a comedian and could always be replaced by another comedian. Obviously it didn't work out

I love how Adam is more concerned with the principle then the money. He wanted the exact difference between his and Drews contract when he could have easily had them round it up. Pretty much sending a message to the bosses that he just wants what he should have been paid.

Whomever is right or wrong .... Loveline went on life support immediately when Adam left. It was a bad decision by the Radio Corporate interests & it was a bad decision by Dr. Drew too.

I have to respectfully disagree. I came across the show in 2013 and it ended in 2016 (11 years after Adam left). Life support implies that it should have ended shortly after he left. Not at all the case.

@@UnofficialLovelineMoments Loveline was on TV when Adam was on. In the later years, they had to cut down on co-hosts cause they didn't have the money for it. Loveline lost its cultural relevance long before it got cancelled. That's what life support means.

Damn. Adam _never_ shit-talks Jimmy even a little bit. Even when he's going on a rant specifically about late night hosts, he will make sure to leave Kimmel out of it. Never understood why until I heard him tell Ben Shapiro about how he managed to break into the business. Kimmel gave him one piece of practical advice... which is like precious gold in show business. They _love_ giving academic advice to people, with no practical application. But _none_ of them want to share usable info like "Go to this place and talk to this person and tell them this." Kimmel bought Adam's life-long loyalty by giving him one nugget of _real_ advice. "Create a distinctive and funny character and call into the show _as_ that character." That's it. He just... pointed out a back door for him. But in Hollywood, that level of actual usable help apparently makes them blood-brothers forever, no matter how much they fundamentally disagree about things now.

Loveline got bad when it was just Adam talking about his projects and they took 10 calls a night. Best years we’re 2000-2001 cuz the two hosts hit a groove and anderson was there with the drops and to give Adam pushback

Yup, we liked the upstart wiseacre Adam, not the bossman blowing hard about his maid. Was bad enough in 2003 but by 2010 pretty much unlistenable. Either way, as Adam says, was always better than Drew solo, however more likeable Drew was. Drew not playing along with Adam on the contract also explains some of the open hostility we heard in summer 2005.

I think it's pretty obvious what happened here. As soon as Drew was given his contract, he signed it because he knows he would never leave Loveline, he knows they know it, and probably never gave it another thought. He considered it a public service, talking to callers during commercial breaks and even doing long stints without getting paid at all. The agents lowballed Adam because they knew they had all the power in the negotiations once Drew signed, and when Adam brought it up to him, I'm sure it worried Drew but I'm guessing he was hoping it'd work itself out. I think that tracks with Drew's slightly naïve personality. I'm glad Adam forgave Drew but I don't blame him for being upset. Drew should have had more sense than to sign the contract so soon.

I like Adam, but Dr. Drew built the show and was the core of the show. Dr. Drew started out doing the show for no pay and sacrificed more for the show. Adam would even joke about how Dr. Drew's kids and wife would go out "without papa" when Dr. Drew was at the studio doing loveline. Adam could have been replaced, not easily but could have. Adam should have gotten paid about 60-70% of what Dr. Drew got paid.

Don't count other people's money. This is pure envy. I'm sure Drew didn't think up some scheme to find out how to screw Adam. It's what he was offered and he accepted it. Misplaced anger if I ever heard it. It was decided by the company that Adam is less valuable than Drew and thus was offered less money. How is any of this Drew's fault? The anger is fueled purely by jealousy. Maybe Drew thought Adam would be offered something he would be happy with, and I'm sure they never gave Drew a number or even an idea of what they're giving someone else and he would never ask what Adam is being paid. That's not his business. The show was great with the two of them. It really was great. But maybe some exec got tired of Adam's ranting and overall assholishness and wanted to go in a different direction. So he got priced out. He was given the option to take less money than he wanted or walk, so he walked. Don't piss over someone else's success. Be a man and accept that you were not worth what you thought you were worth.
