I'm an American Sign Language interpreter, and when I was first learning sign language, the country signs were changing to become more politically correct by using the country's own sign for their country. As I understand it, the sign he shows for Ireland is the official sign for Ireland *in* Ireland and represents the harp, which is the symbol of Ireland (the old American sign was derived from the sign for potato!), even though I agree, it looks like you're flicking something off your lapel. I've seen the one for England too but never knew it was BSL for the letter "E." (ASL uses one-handed fingerspelling.) The sign for Australia is similar to what he shows, but you're not "picking it up and moving over there"; the two hands move FORWARD with the middle finger flicking off the thumb at the same time, like a hopping kangaroo (which replaced the old American sign that sort of looks like a salute forming the shape of the turned-up side brim of a traditional Aussie "digger" hat. It's always nice to learn a new sign though, so I'll trust he's pronouncing that native Australian one correctly. (I think it'd be quite intelligible in American Sign Language as well!) XD

+mooncove As far as I'm aware, the ISL sign for Ireland is quite like a salute. Flat hand, palm down, side of index finger touching forehead. Roll on index finger to palm out, back of index finger touching forehead.

Timothy Green Interesting. That sounds exactly like the old sign for Australia--denoting the Australian military "slouch" hat that was turned up on one side of the brim. I've seen a few different signs for Ireland, but that wasn't one of them. Do you know the etymology/how it's related to Ireland?

He kinda changes this story every time he tells it, saying he meets the stewardess the second time in different locations, out on the street, in a café, on another flight, I've never heard him tell the story the same way twice

@IIproductionsII To be honest, most comedians have a load of jokes and stories which form the basis of virtually all their stand-up. They all have certain jokes and stories that they tell repeatedly. These are probably jokes and stories that they've told at past gigs and were received particularly well, ones they can fall back on if the routine hits a tough spot, or to start a routine. Ones they KNOW will get a laugh.
