I literally started doing this exact thing on toms about a month or two ago for the same reasons, with the same plugin. It's an amazing thing what you can do with Saturn. I even use the dynamics control on the high-band to reduce bleed and it works REALLY well. Tried it after seeing Eric Valentine use Saturn all around his drums.

For the life of me, I cannot get the MIDI map to work. Only thing that's getting through is the Snare and a single tom. Surely can't be the only one experiencing this? UPDATE: I fixed some of this by enabling all MIDI channels in the Kontakt input. The issue is that the drums are being played from different channels (I don't know if it was just easier to group this way). So only some snare and tom hits were being played on channel 1 (the default input for Kontakt). Basically the rest of the drum set i being played on channel 10. This guy goes over how to do it fairly quickly. Just set the MIDI channels to "omni" and you should be good to go. kzbin.info/www/bejne/emGbhKBul7BoebM I appreciate you guys sharing this stuff with us, and I'm definitely not here to complain about free lessons and practice material. However, I think it would be better to put the MIDI on a single channel and make it as simple as possible to get going, since we're a lot of people on very different DAWs with various level of skill. And Hi Hats hits seem to not exist at all for some reason. I couldn't find them anywhere in the MIDI file. So the intro is just BD and Snare and a few crashes here and there. So it just seems like an blatant omission or am I missing something?

I would say one of the biggest things to help anyone with drum sound… nobody really says it outright but…distortion. It is used on drums. It’s pretty lightly and it is meticulously catered to each drum… and people just refer to it as “saturation” and in logic “exciter”… and other things… but it’s light distortion. Generally just don’t distort the whole kit… and don’t distort hard nor on the low end really. But it can really really help cymbals and snares that need some power and clarity. Also if you need some slosh or voice or character in your kick… use a touch of it in your high mids and you will pull out some voice. Sometimes using really light distortion after reverb will help (or hurt) the character as well. Experiment. It’s important. Plenty of people would immediately be adverse to the idea of “distortion” on drums. But any good sounding record… it’s almost certainly there to some degree. Even if it’s simply from analogue saturation… that’s essentially just light distortion. Don’t be afraid of it. But just learn what’s appropriate and what works for your own sound. I like cymbals… especially hats that have a meanness in the 8khz area. I would never get it without a touch of saturation.

Great course, really helpfull! The pluggins do make a huge difference though in shapping the overall sound of each individual drum parts. Unfortunately not many can spend over 2K $ on pro pluggins like the ones used in this video. I'm sure we can get to the same result (or 90% of it) using cheaper or free pluggins. 29:09 You mentioned that you added Saturn to all individual toms with the same exact setting. Could you just put only one Saturn to the Tom bus to achieve the same result?
