The problem with this idea, some companies can be so cutthroat, instead of giving you a raise, they would rather fire you and hire someone who is willing to work for the same wage.

But, if you're sharing the information with your co-workers it is easier to negotiate collectively. Few companies can afford to fire all of their employees at once. It's the principle behind unionisation.

It's not a matter of being cutthroat, if the company can get someone else for the same money or less, why would they pay you more? Some people are better than others and also better negotiators. Salary is a personal matter.

My brother was unemployed, so my aunt, who owns a moving company, hired him. She was paying him 12$ an hour (slightly over the minimum wage here in Ontario), and told him to keep it hush hush, because most of the other workers were only getting paid minimum. 2 months later (and being cut back many hours) he was talking to his friend that just got hired, same job and turns out he was getting paid $15/h. then it turned out everyone was getting paid $15/h. He confronted my aunt about it, and got fired. She claimed some BS "he was falling behind on his hours" despite being scheduled for 4 hours a week. I'm a film maker so i have to deal with paying people (because i'm not big enough to have a production company, and people to do that for me) i'm often up front about how much people are getting paid. People trust you more if you are up front and honest... which is perfect for betraying their trust down the road!

I've never understood why people feel weird talking about money. If one of my friends works harder than me, has more qualifications, does a riskier job etc why shouldn't they earn more? Why would that offend me? If you rub it in my face, then you're being a jerk, but simply stating facts is nothing to be ashamed about. Not talking about money also makes it hard for people to avoid debt traps and talk about budgeting etc. Just be honest.
@absurdist5134

It would offend you because a lot of the time hard work or risky work is just another furphy. And in reality, lots of people all over the shop are paid unfairly.

The reason people sometimes don’t talkabout it is because sometimes “ignorance is bliss”. If I make an amount of money that covers my needs and wants, I should be fine, but when a friend who has an easier job makes more than me I would’ve preferred not to know.

Its all well and good to ask for a reise, or full time work, or just to be treated like a human being. But you have to remember most new graduates have an impossibly difficult time finding work because of their lack of experience, which means most jobs already have plenty of candidates but only 1 opening. This means that if a new grad has a job he has to keep it no matter what. Bad pay? No Benefits? Bad treatment? The second a new grad complains about any of this he'll be replaced. If you have experience behind your back then you can negotiate salary, benefits, and the like. However, if you're someone with no work experience you take what little scraps they give you and be thankful they let you live with a roof over your head.

Джон Смит You clearly have no clue about business. Explain this, if you can hire other people who do the same work for same pay, why not hire them? You cannot answer it because it does not happen in real life. You also have to factor in implicit factors many people tend to overshadow. Just because they appear to have same duty and role does not mean they are equal. It happens internally as well (male vs other male).

You do realize that for Walmart to pay every single worker a livable minimum wage, it would require them adding $0.10 to every package of macaroni and cheese? That's nothing. America has relied on the workers of companies big and small to work longer hours for less pay. That's not the American Dream. That's a rich man's dream. A dream only .1% of Americans will live.

And I've wasted thousands of dollars, to the point where I went broke. Not afraid to admit that. I don't get why people get insecure about money of all things, like maybe you're too fat or talk with a funny accent, but who gives a damn how many dollars you have? It's common in conservative countries. I'm from Asia myself and the culture is similar to be not giving out your salaries for no reason. Two main reason are, if you are making a small amount, you wouldn't want people to look down on you. Second, you wouldn't want people to think you are making lots of money if you do, you wouldn't want people to approach you to borrow money from you since you are rich. Personally i don't agree with these views but i do experience such thoughts even though i consciously tell myself not to think this way. I might have been ingrained by the culture of my society unfortunately.

Love this series, except for one thing in this video. There is no wage gap. When people say things like "women are payed less than men", it's because they're comparing the average pay for every woman compared to every man. This is an unfair comparison because men on average work more dangerous, higher paying jobs than woman. If it were, say, woman teachers getting less than male teachers, then there is a wage gap.. And the African American getting less than Caucasians part would most likely only be true if you have a racist employer.

Actually there is a wage gap. Women who work the same hours, in the same industry, performing the same tasks, with comparable or better levels of Education, tend to make slightly to moderately less money than their male counterparts. Moreover, women tend to be promoted less often than men, and that's even after taking into account a difference in personality or stereotypes of women being "too afraid" to ask. That being said, the frequency and the amount of which the wage discrimination is played out in the media is way overblown.

People have to keep the companies in mind though, too. They can only afford to pay so much, and usually they pay a certain salary because it keeps the workers happy but also isn't too much for the company to afford. The sad part is - watching the interaction with the FIRST scenario… YES, that IS how people react. The company is so much bigger than any of us, and most people don’t compare themselves to a big picture scale, but to each other. The lady is right that your coworkers are more likely to resent YOU for making more than them, not the company for paying you differently. And that’s why more workplaces should unionize - because a collective workforce with the bargaining power to get a contract makes the company legally liable to pay everyone equally.

Charlie Foxtrot read what you're commenting about you dumbass, they said that they were just throwing numbers out there, and you assume the opposite. Some of the people on this video need to take their foot out of their ass and put it back in their mouth. That includes you Charlie Foxtrot.

This is all true. My dad owns a business and my brother works for him. My brother’s co-worker made more money than him and my brother wasn’t mad at his co-worker at all. But when my brother got home, he got in an argument with my dad as in why my brother should be getting more money

Coworkers certainly should share salary information, the current company I'm working in is paying me less amount than they are paying to my junior's. When I came to know about it i told may manager that I'm going to resign. He told me he will give will me raise and told me not to put my paper and he then setup my meeting with another sr manager. During discussion with this person i told him I'm not happy with current project and also my salary is another reason why I want to resign. So he told me that i will be assigned to other project and also agree give me raise i asked. 5 minutes after meeting i got message from him that we need to discuss my salary again and set another meeting. This time he told he can't give me raise i asked for as some of other employees are not getting paid that much ammount. After this meeting i put resignation as I was totally fed up by the shitty excuses. Also around this time our company had planned trip for all the employees. I was told they can't take me to trip because it's company policy to not let employees on notice period to come to trip. After the trip i had another meeting with senior management of company and they agreed to give me raised i asked earlier.
