In this final episode of our Dolby Atmos Masterclass, we go into a Pro Tools mix, taking it from stereo to Dolby Atmos, using some tips and tricks to give your Dolby Atmos mix a creative and immersive feeling.
Check out the original stereo mixing tutorial:

While you may not be able to hear exactly what Rob is through your headphones or stereo setup, we hope this video gives insight to how you can use Dolby Atmos, deliver it and also find creative ways to utilize the new technology of Dolby.

ADAM Audio was founded in March 1999 in Berlin. Since then the company has been developing, manufacturing and distributing loudspeakers in the field of Professional Audio.
The development of the X-ART (eXtended Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeter based on the 1960’s invention of the Air Motion Transformer by Oskar Heil was largely responsible for the company’s founding. Producing sound not with a piston-like diaphragm as is done in most of the loudspeakers that are on the market, but using a pleated diaphragm that is capable of moving the air 4 times faster than the folds themselves are moving was the appealing idea behind it all. The achieved results were intriguing and gave ample reason for moving forward.

This is all great. I just wish everything wasn’t so expensive. Even listening to Atmos requires a subscription…and an expensive one at that. A lot of this music won’t get heard in this format simply because people can’t afford it. To this day, I STILL haven’t heard anything in Atmos (theater or otherwise), other than “demos” on headphones that’s not even the actual thing, simply because I can’t afford the service and there are ZERO theaters nearby where I live that offer it. Dolby really needs to make this more available/ affordable if they really want this format to be a replacement.

Emphasis must be on binaural. Folk won't spend money on expansive gear.

I've just upgraded my existing stereo mix room to Atmos for $1000 and I don't feel I've compromised in any serious way. It definitely takes some thought, experience and ingenuity but in terms of music production cost, I wouldn't call that expensive. I won't go so far as calling the subscription being expensive, as music is worth a lot to me, certainly the $25 I pay Tidal for a family account including Atmos. That said, I think you're right on the money about Dolby not being very customer friendly, the fact that you even need a different subscription to access Atmos is really strange to me if they really want to push the format. 🤔 Also, providing Atmos mixes to streaming services is more expensive than stereo, it's like they don't really want to push it too fast. I don't think the binaural mixes are very good (yet?) and that is my biggest concern, people need to like the format to adopt it and currently stereo sounds better to me (YMMV), 9 out of 10 times. If people heard the mixes in a speaker setup thought, I guarantee that they'd love it. So here's a really crazy guess, what if Dolby is aware of all this and are actually putting on the brakes so that consumer gear like AVR's and soundbars improve as well as developing the binaural algorithms and/or allowing for the mix engineers to learn how to make the format sound good. Full speculation from my side but I don't understand the lay of the land either. ✌️

Rob, I was really hoping you were going to address the mix bus chain and mastering issue a bit more than you did in this video. Will you post a video where you show us some solutions? I feel like bus processing and also bouncing the deliverable are important aspects to show us in order to demonstrate the "full workflow of a mix going to Dolby Atmos"
@svarogstudio
@svarogstudio Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'm now trying to do an atmos mix for an already mixed track, and my bus processing impacts the sound a lot. Once you start turning tracks into objects or sending them to surround bed, they bypass the bus they were previously going into and the whole mix falls apart.

You do a better job compared to anyone I have heard with the ATMOS for music process. Great video- thanks! I’ve listened to a lot of ATMOS music on my ATMOS (KII monitors) in the studio and in my Klipsch monitor based ATMOS home theater. I find it almost immediately fatiguing and a totally fake, video game like experience. All I want is a real sounding experience with all the dynamic range, imaging and normal sounding phase and related information. ATMOS IS NOT THAT!

Absolutely great introduction. Plain English. It's immediately obvious that when converting a stereo mix to Atmos the stereo panning gets removed. But it struck me as I was watching/listening - don't we need to completely re-assess reverb? With stereo we have been using reverb to make musicians sound like they are in a room - but half the time that we were doing that we weren't really doing what we wanted to do - which was to put them SOMEWHERE in the room. Now that we can do the two separate things I think that we need to use less reverb. For me the piano in this mix has too much reverb (though probably not in the stereo mix) but in the Atmos mix I think it did not have enough presence - it is too washed out. And guitars too. Just my initial reactions. Whether I'm right in this case my general point is that we must think again about how we use various techniques. Thank you for this fantastic crash course.

Great class, thank you. I do wonder if we can get more explanation on how to use busses and submixes while mixing in atmos. Most, if not all of us mixing use a lot of busses to group drums, guitars etc... and for me they impact the sound in a big way. In atmos the objects go directly to the renderer, and so do the bed tracks, so remixing an already finished track for atmos is kind of a nightmare.

What about the other way around? I understand that all Netflix content is mixed to Atmos. But what about the stereo mix that the vast majority use when watching and listening to that Atmos mix on a regular two channel setup? I often hear severe phase issues in the sound when watching Netflix (and HBO) so my guess is that there are some sort of ‘imploding’ back to LR being done in real time in the streaming?

Very instructive! I know that what we are hearing now is not the full 7.1.4 he has. However, is it current binarual or simply a stereo reflection? I was wondering if what I was hearing through my headphone was just pure stereo or still had some spatial aspect to it. Im guessing it was merely stereo as I understand that youtube would need a renderer codec embeded but still a bit confused about some aspect of this technology.

I don't really understand what is said at the end regarding final export formats. AFAIK, the expected export format is ADM and both Production and Mastering suite can provide it. As for "mastering" I'd be curious to know which EQ/Compression/Limiting tools are able to process an Atmos file as a whole :-) I'd love a video on the mastering of this track for instance (which is great and greatly mixed by the way)

Well, Apple has entered the ring and Tidal got a swift kick in the nads. Amazon can battle. Tidal can’t resolve simple technical issues over a six month period. Apple’s Atmos sounds a bit more robust on my system via AppleTV 4K feeding Denon AVR-x8200wa’s 11 channels

Some really nice insight, thank you. Question: I'm trying to understand, with the LFE channel... I saw there was little to no level bouncing in that channel.. How would you mix a full range instrument like for example a bass guitar? Would you need to have 2 separate channels of the bass with low and high pass respectively, and send the low pass channel to the LFE channel and the rest to whichever object/channel you choose? Or does ATMOS register frequency content automatically from the bed channels and send it where it is appropriate?
@TheSteveSteele
@TheSteveSteele 2 жыл бұрын
The DAW has a plugin for bass management that acts as a crossover to limit what’s sent to the LFE channel. In a stereo up mix, the bass manager plugin takes the sound information from the Left and Right channels and creates a LFE channel. You have some control over this, but you work within that context. So no, you’ll never have to create a LFE channel, not like your describing. Your last comment is basically what’s happening. In Atmos there’s also processing and psychoacoustics taking place, but the LFE content is fairly straight forward.

I want to encourage mixers to not always limit the electric bass to mono center, tied to the bass drum. I understand why a mixer would feel most comfortable placing the bass there, and some music definitely calls for that placement, (and that physics). Consider the mixing choices on many Beatles releases that helped Paul McCartney bass parts stand out, and often lead songs melodically, (sometimes due to the limits of the track count, but other times because the bass was purposely panned hard to one side). Consider placing a second auxiliary bass part in a different space, or get brave and hard pan appropriate bass parts.
