Thanks for that tip. I'm training the serve now and hope to have it somewhat ready once the team-practice starts again. At my level even if the movement not that fluent it could make me some points as its the deceptive opposite to my regular backspin serves.

@@ragnarblackmane6024 That's what I thought (as a pure amateur) - you seem to need really soft rubber to get much of spin from a ball free-fall. And then, how to get any speed ?
@marcoborrillo8097

I've actually used this serve, but you do it 1,000 times better. I used to toss the ball high and then let it hit the racket, creating some topspin. But I went down with the racket at contact just a little, so it ended up being a dead ball. I used to call this "heavy nothing" becuase I made a huge underspin motion but it was really dead. Now what you are doing is letting it hit your racket without moving, so instead of dead ball it becomes pure topspin. But even watching the replay, it is amazing but you are so quick to begin the downward motion that the eye cannot see it. It really looks like you are chopping the ball. Heck, you even fooled Timo Boll. You are world class at this.

20 years ago, i also ''invented'' a serve, which uses the down-spin. Unfortunately my ''invention'' was so hard to master it, that even i struggled with it. In the beginning only 1 of 20 tries succeded as it was intendet. Even in the end, after years only one of 3 serves of mine succeded like i intended. But when i was able to do it, no one i know of was able to response to it. I could teach it to everyone. I dont play table tennis anymore (since about 20 years) , because i lost my main partner to play (my uncle). I would like to play again, but i dont know anyone from my friends who play it or like to play it. I am sure, i am by far not so good as i was back then. But i still know how to make my serve .. in theory at least. I would need to practice a lot again to get as half as good as i was 20 years ago. Oh and as far i remember the snake serve was there even 25 years ago. My response usually was soft to it, back then , because you dont wanna know how crap my racquet was back then. Because i couldnt efford a good racquet i build my own from cheap racquets from dumpsters - meaning : thrown away racquets. I took the wood from one, and the rubber from others - i think i even used to layers of crappy rubbers to give my racquet a glimpse of spin-ability , and it worked. Downside was: this, and the crappy wood made my racquet very heavy. At least 3-4 times heavier than professional racquets back then. I estimate that my racquet was around 300 or 350 grams. So i started handycapped from day one, against opponents who are used to have 50 dollar racquets or even 100 dollar racuets. Things got worse, when the glue on my rubbers began to effect the rubber itself, and the rubber losed his elastic behavior and got more spongy. And even with that racquet back in the days, i beat almost every opponent. I never was in competitions though , but i played against few tennis club members, etc Later on i recognized that i was able to compensate a lot of the downsides of my crap racquet by playing it in chinese holding. It took away a lot of force needed to make spins with that racquet, and also it was less force needed to give the right angles and more control to the ball. Downside, as usual in the chinese holding is the backhand is weaker. But the advantages were bigger than the downsides. Since then , i am playing chinese, and left handed, which also compensated a lot of downsides of the racquet against my opponents back then. Also not to forget: the balls back than were smaller, and therefore got more speed. To react with a heavy spongy-rubber raquet to a smaller faster ball properly was much harder back than.

You swapped shirts! First was the "wanna play?" shirt, the second was "what happened!?" shirt and last was the "snakeman shirt". Maybe I watched this video to much times...

whoaaa this is the first time seeing people explaining this serve!!! I've been doing this type of serve since 25 years ago (different form of course) and still didn't know how I did it! :P and I still not dare to do it in a formal game because my success rate is still at 80% hahaha. Thanks for the explanation!!

Awesome! Subtle contact, deceptive after-motion... the timing takes practice... but I'm happy to be of ... service. 8>D

That's a good tutorial for all people but I think throwing high the ball mostly people expect you to fail your "underspin" serve, but if they really expect pro serves it would work like a miracle.
