Why Being A Musician In 2023 Is So Difficult | HUGE Music Industry Shift

Being a musician in 2023 is more difficult than ever before and for good reason. Between social media, creating content, dealing with haters, time management, and still working on the music itself it can feel like an impossible path to pursue. That is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to why being a musician is so difficult though.

I'm a begginer classical musician and the hardest thing I face in my journey to become a professional is that untouchable feeling I get when I look to people who've made it, my teachers, soloists, people I respect... It can be so hard to see myself ever manage to get there, manage to teach lessons to students, listen to the music I wrote be perfomed, watch myself play in an orchestra... It feels so far away that it's almost impossible. Despite this I don't think I'd ever forgive myself if I gave up on music for something easier and more stable. I watched one of your videos last year at a point in my life where I was trying to figure out if pursuing my love for music was even a choice I had and the tough love you give combined with the guidance and support... it was exactly the push I needed to realize how much it would pain me to not pursue the life I want to have. Thank you for believing in me when I couldn't. Thank you for being genuine.

Hey Adam. Could you do me a favor. Cause the one thing I've been doing right is the music. I feel like my product and the music I put it out is top tier but I can't seem to figure out how to market it properly. Any chance you could check out my latest song and channel and provide some advice in the comments on things I can do to grow more as a creator. I'm consistent. I use everything I've seen in your videos but I'm doing something wrong. Here is my latest. I appreciate the time if you take it. Your the man. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXvCgJd3eKaYabM

Mine was getting discouraged because I always heard that if you’re consistent, the rest will follow. I’ve been putting music out since about 2010 and I’ve been consistent the whole time without seeing much result. I came to the conclusion that expecting results was a bad way to do music. Do it because you love it. If nothing comes from it, keep creating solely on the fact you love it.

I have been a musician for 12yrs. (and never worked a job, and still don't have one) and I'm satisfied because it pays the bills. I had a chance to be famous back in 86 and wanted to until I met Daryl Hall from the band "Hall &Oates" and he explained everything that I would need to be famous and all of the work that I had to do not only to get famous but to remain famous and the advise kinda made me have a change of heart. And I decided to just remain a local musician and I've never been happier and more satisfied. Thank you, Mr. Hall.

My biggest struggle currently just boils down to feeling overwhelmed with all my sub-jobs - between marketing, creating consistently, expanding on other revenue streams, making my videos (which are pretty involved). Feeling like I’m not doing enough and yet feeling burnt out from all I am doing at the same time. I am happy to say I am in a good place (thanks to your advice among others like you!) all from organic growth on KZbin which has also led to organic growth on music streaming sites!

The insane amount of "short-form content" that is reccomended for someone to put out on the various forms of social media just for one song is insane. You can spend months making content to promote one song, rather than spending those months making more music, and/or even practicing your true craft. It's a different industry for sure. Really great video.
@KarLEASty
@KarLEASty Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right on this one! However, once you have your for example 30 pieces of content, you can reupload them religiously and get traction for free basically. Ive seen differences of 10k views (on IG, while I had 90 Followers) for the same exact videos after reuploading them. Then you can create content less frequently and really focus on the music and the promotion of it. Good luck!

The industry at the lowest and highest levels is also way too saturated. On top of what you mentioned in the video there’s this AND, the point of entry to get into music and start doing is way too low, far too easy and too accessible which is both good and bad.

My biggest struggle has been figuring out what content I can do that isn’t out of character for me. I can make quality music, videos, pictures, and graphics, but I know that I have to leverage the social platforms I feel I can work best in and then make genuine content that gets people’s attention and keeps it (while having a schedule that keeps my output consistent and not overwhelming for me 😅). The opportunities are there. If I’m not getting where I want to, it’s on me. Some of it takes time, some of it takes me getting my act together.

Excellent - to hear reconfirmation on all aspects here. I'm 62 and still going at it. Indeed - I've never seen things to be so difficult - and yes the over-saturation effect is definitely present. BUT I look at it as positive. Quality over Quantity can possibly work better than ever IF "the artist" work ethic is strong enough. You may fail many times. BUT if you keep going strong and not let it get you down - you will have some "wins". Create a demand. Use every tool you can and create a demand. Good words here Adam!! Refreshing to be reminded and reconfirmed now and then. ⚔⚔⚔

Every single aspect of professional musicianship is so, so oversaturated in 2023. I love the creative side of music as much as I ever have, I’ve even built a reputation as a decent videographer over the last few years. But seriously: I wish we could put the whole social media genie back in the bottle. I hate it with a passion. And marketing. Urgh. Every second spent arsing around with this sh*t is a second I aren’t creating. Take me back to the 90’s.

Wow Adam, this is such an important video for all aspiring artists. It really puts a lot of things in perspective. Especially the “300 people in the house” idea. I recently got over 100 listeners on Spotify for the first time and I thought that was amazing. I went back to Instagram (after deleting it for some time) and found the engagement to be so much lower than on other social platforms like Reddit/Discord. It kinda discouraged me for a second but I realized that I just have to find my audience and stick with a consistent routine and strategy. Putting the wheels in motion for different strategies in order to get myself out there and this is an amazing video to listen to. “Comparison is the thief of joy” resonated with me so much. Thank you for all you do, you’ve inspired me a ton just off this one video. - Caleb

And P.S. I’m never going to give up doing this! I’ve been making music for the last 10 years now and trying to get myself out there. I’ve had so many failures and so many people tell me I shouldn’t be doing this. I’ve worked with artists anywhere from not having any music on streaming to having a million monthly listeners on Spotify. I’ve went through depression, financial setbacks, ruined relationships with friends and family, and nothing has stopped me from doing this. I know I have the talent, and I know I have the drive and the work ethic. I just have to convince myself that my music is worth listening to on days that I think it’s not. I have to be my biggest supporter in times of doubt and frustration. Thank you so much for posting this video, I will be returning to watch it frequently when I get in one of my depressive states! This is all wonderful information! SO many people always say things like "music is too saturated," but they always give up. Anything you want to push through, music included, has so many people quit before they even get any traction. I definitely agree that it's a challenge to get through making content to post on social media, but I say all the time how social media is a great tool. The outro of "I am one of one and deserve to be heard" is how I see it, especially with freedom and fulfillment. Even though I'm not big nor is my music well know, but there's fulfillment in sharing my stuff with the world.

I will say, I have one song that has done really well organically. Got lucky 4 years ago and it hit the algorithms nicely. I’ve had some other in luck in areas. The business side can be fun but also tiring. But even when feeling super burnt out and experimenting with new sounds and not getting the results I was looking for, I’m still happier doing what I love compared to something else. Without creating, I would probably go mad. The fun part is finding out who your listener base is and finding that audience. It’s not easy but nothing to stress about tbh. The art is what comes first

It’s not for everyone but I prefer to just have a gallery of tunes rather than the traditional route of music promotion. I’ll write than record a song and upload usually within a few days. Very intelligent conversation ! Glad to hear people saying these things. Having been floating around "in the industry" since I was a teenager and now being in my mid 40s, one of the big things I think is - we can't all be the artist. Any music conference I've ever been to the panels all say the same thing basically. Some version of "get a bunch of friends together who are interested in the same thing and make a scene.". Well just like thew world needs plumbers as well as Instagram models, your scene needs songwriters and engineers as well as lead guitarists. Rudy Van Gelder was literally in his early 20s and had some recording equipment set up in his parents living room.. where he recorded his first album as an engineer - Miles Davis "The Birth of Cool". Today most of us are recording our own albums and writing songs for ourselves to sing. We gotta get equally excited about what other people around us are doing. Or get ourselves around new people.

Great vid! Been in business for over 40 years and the formula has never changed. People think the internet is the save all but it isn’t. I know independent artist making a living without TikTok, Instagram and KZbin. The play venues, clubs, festivals and get deals. Nothing replaces hard work. If you are an artist and are listening to people telling you that you NEED social media to be successful, they are wrong! It helps, but great songwriting, great production and great performances. That is what sells. And regardless of what any Social Media sales person tells you, you cannot compete with a major label. No way! Stop the conspiracy BS and get a deal if your good enough. In the meantime get out there and do shows. A lot of shows. Focus on being an entertainer and not a social media sensation. That’s what we are looking for.

This was great to hear! As a musician building up my music career throughout the year, it has been a struggle. However, I have seen improvements in 2023. However, I'll continue to approve my career, and make a bigger career. I do not want to give up, even though I have some struggles starting up. Seeing weekly improvements is great to see and keeps me motivated. Everything in this was real and positive, and helped me put things in perspective, which is much appreciated.

Genuine emotional intent, Ivy. Every day for the rest of our lives, the question each of us has to ask and answer, is the following: What kind of WORTH did we sign up to represent in spite of obstacles: Is it singing WORTH? Writing WORTH? Composing WORTH? Playing WORTH? Engineering WORTH? Perhaps it’s a combination of all or some. If we believe that we have made an oath to any measure of WORTH, which is our internal knowledge, that each of us is (Warded Ownership Rights Through Hardship). Then, we do more and not less, to become more and not less. Listen or look at what you like about what you’ve done and do better. To hell with the promises. Just do better.

“What number is good enough for you?” resonated with me. We are our own worst critics. I get tired of hearing my own voice and when I compare myself to others, I feel very frustrated because I don’t have “that sound”…whatever sound it may be. Maybe he/she has a great belt or register for that song. It could be that they don’t have that same “sound” in a different song….I’ve grown to become comfortable with my own unique voice and constantly remind myself that I’m not creating videos for them. I’m creating them for myself because I need to step outside my comfort zone. Thanks for the couching and encouragement!

I don’t know about being an artist. But as a producer, it isn’t that difficult to generate sales. KZbin and Beatstars is ALL you really need. I get little views to be honest and still make a living.

This is such a great comment. Too many people focus on views as the top metric but if you are making 100 sales with 500 view it’s better than 50 with 1000.

Yeah there’s most definitely a balance with social media though. I think it can keep people stuck in a room for to long away from reality. Being live, in front of humans in real life matters. Don’t skip that. People want real, everybody’s being somebody online. Best of luck y’all, it’s a special year! If you’re insecure I get it, we all go through it. Stop worrying about those things cause when we pass away most of it never mattered.

Biggest struggle? Patience. In the 9 years I spent playing in the ATX this has helped me. Longevity is one of many keys to open up doors but the others have equal value or more. Be Polite. Be on Time that means early. Be in tune. Be personable and positive about your work. Don’t take short cuts. Be honest with yourself and others. I know this reads like a kindergarten class but it is all true. Put a value on yourself and what you do and others will see it. They don’t need to understand it. Thank you Adam! Enjoy your videos.
