Please don't advocate for the use of ai. As it is right now, all ai is trained off of stolen artwork and screws over artists like myself. If someone needs art for their game before sending it to a publisher, the other options you mentioned would be much more ethical.

Very insightful, thank you! Could you do something similar about game pieces? eg pawns, buildings etc. This might not be your expertise though.

I’d love to - I enjoyed this video. It might be a bit more subjective though! The reason to use different card options is pretty straightforward. I’ll give it some thought.

Have been adding print files to Launch Lab to get an idea of cost. The issue I'm hitting is the card print quantity. I have numerous small decks, each greater in number than the minimum but considerably less than the next amount. But I'm still paying. Unless I'm missing something, I've not been able to figure out how to print my tableau boards as they do not have standard dimensions as listed on the site.

Yeah, cards are printed on large sheets, so there are often some left over. I’ve found this with other online printers too. The cost is essentially “up to 63 cards” or “up to 72 cards” etc. if you need 64 cards, you’ll be paying more even though 8 are wasted. (I can’t remember the exact number of cards per sheet - but that’s the principle). If you make a home-prototype, this isn’t an issue - but it will be if you go on to self-publish. If you license to a publisher, it becomes their issue to deal with. So, if you know you’re going to use a specific printer (such as Launch Lab) I guess it’s worth designing your game with these numbers in mind. Often you can tweak the deck size during the design process to maximise what you get from the printer. You can also use extra cards for player aids etc. Don’t forget your cards can have different card backs within a single deck. So if your game has multiple decks, you can combine them all into one large deck with variable backs. This means you shouldn’t need to waste too many cards. It becomes more costly if you’re using different sizes for different decks - because there will be wastage for each size. I haven’t dabbled with making player boards on Launch Lab yet. Maybe for a future project!

You can consider bundling the small decks into a single group of cards when you submit to Launch Lab, and separate out the decks when you receive them? This will likely be the most cost-efficient approach? For your tableau boards that don't conform to standard dimensions, you could use the custom punchboard option in Launch Lab (tooling fee applies). Alternatively, you could adopt a more standard dimension if the shape of the tableau is not absolutely critical for the function of your game.

@@AdaminWales I didn't realize you could do multiple decks in a single print. I'll look into that. That should save me quite a bit. Thanks for that info.

I've done all my prototypes by hand and dreaded the prospect of spending months/years learning graphic design to make professional art for my games or paying someone else to do that. Yes, you don't need that, but great art is an important part of my game. I looked into AI and started using Bing Image Generator and have been frankly shocked by how much I've learned. The images I generated were never perfect so this forced me to learn photo editing to fix the text, erase imperfections, format and combine aspects of images together, etc. I would'nt have learned any of that without the tool of AI to fill in the gaps of my skill set.

After seeing the linen finish the gloss looks a bit cheep. It seems like linen would be the better option for cards placed on a table. The light reflections would be like blind spots.
@AdaminWales

I agree - but I think cards with outstanding art (like Dixit) would potentially lose something with a linen finish. That said, it might look like the canvas of a painter!

Should be pretty straightforward to sleeve Poker, Bridge or Mini-Euro / Mini-American sizes (as shown in the video) but the square sizes aren’t usually so easy!
@dago6410

Paper print put into sleeve is the right way, BBUT thats not the end, you need tocput a cheap bulkcrap magic csrd in behind the printed card tockeep the whole thing rigid. Thats how magic players proxy cards and thats by far the bestest way to get a cheap easy early prototype for sure. Of course using the like the company youre shilling for in this video is a geat idea at a later stage... P.s. stop shilling xd hahahaha
