Roy, I've got that very same anvil in 132 lb weight. I was wondering what I was going to do about that huge hardy hole in the anvil. I'd ordered up a hardy cone with a 1" shank and it is loose and sloppy. Thanks to you, Thomas, and your informative video here I can now see about making up a hardy plate to take up the space to make my hardy cone snug. Keep up the good work sir!!!!!!

Roy, you could get a short length of thick walled square tube the same OD as the hardy hole and cut v notches in one end. Then weld it to your plate for a snugger fit. I had the reverse problem going from a 30mm hardy to a 25mm. I remade all my hardies! Cheers from Western Australia.

Can't imagine why they made the hardy hole so big. My very old Peter Wright has a nominal 1 1/8" hardy hole, and I've ended up just making new hardy tools that fit rather than dealing with the slop of an adapter. Both ways work!

Gotta try this. I've 2 anvils, a 66lb blue thing and an 1870ish 200lb FN. Now all I need are 2 4x4" plates. The 1/8" plate will do for my blue Bambina. Will have to guesstimate what's needed for Bertha.

That might work for some hardy tools, that's why a lot of us at WRABA make the Brazeal style hardies, 1 size fits most anvils, don't get me wrong. Good idea! originally I thought you would have formed a pocket by driving the steel plate into the hole? with a piece of stock the same as the hardy hole.

That's an odd size Hardy hole for a smaller anvil I think. My Fisher #220 pounder is only a 1" Hardy hole. Good job Roy and Thomas and enjoy your new anvil and Hardy hole stuff. Merry CHRISTmas~

A nice quick fix an oversize hole. I wonder why they sized hardy holes so big on a smallish anvil? Not so much of a risk on your friend's anvil as it has a great deal of supporting metal round it, but on a lot of London pattern anvils, the heel is quite thin and prone to breakage, I have a 4cwt anvil and a 1 1/4cwt Brooks and the hardy hole on each is 1 1/4 inch. If any heavy work is called for, I always go to the larger anvil.
@apache16492

Just grab a 1 3/8 square by 3/16 wall DOM tube, cut down the corners an inch or 2 with an angle grinder, hacksaw, etc, and bend the flaps to a 90... WAYYYYY faster than this. If you want a really tight fit, go a touch heavy on the wall thickness, get it hot and tap your hardy tool into it as long as the end of your hardy shank has a taper in it. You can do all of that in about 5 minutes and 1 heat. Edit: Not to imply this isn't a valid method, especially if you're trying to do everything by hand at the anvil. Just that the method shown in the video is not necessarily "the easy way" unless also taken into the context of doing everything with a hammer. It's also likely that you don't have a piece of that size tube on hand, at which point unless you also don't have the right size drift, by the time you went to the steel supplier and got back with your tube, you may as well have done this in the same amount of time or less

Hi Roy, that an easy way to fix an oversize hole. When I first saw the heading "Hardy Hole" what has Roy done? Is this a subliminal message, or a preview testing the waters for the Year of the Hardy Hole? I am sorry if you take it the wrong way, but I need all the humor I can get to carry me through the day. I really think you set us up to do these things. 🙏🏼☃️🎅🎄

I have a 200 pound Soderfors anvil with a 1-3/8" hardy. I have no idea why it was made this large but it is difficult to find hardy tools without buying 1.5" and grinding down. Do you think this method would work well for an older anvil if the hole is a bit tapered at the top from age/use?

Roy, second comment here and a question. Like I said, I've got this very same anvil that you are currently showing here. Now my question to you is this. I really want to make a hold fast to fit into my Pritchell hole but the problem is is that the Pritchell hole is like 1 3/8" too and I don't want to try and take that thick of stock to make a hold fast. Any suggestions on how I can fix that?

Hey there Anthony. I'm brand new to forging and blacksmith work but I've watched a LOT of videos here. I've noticed that there have been many, many anvils here that have a standard sized 1" hardy hole. That seems to be the norm. Best of luck to you in your endeavors sir.

Oh dear. I got this weird 150 pound Kohlswa which has 1-1/2 in an extra thin heel. Maaaaaaybe a sheet metal workers anvil - could be - large stakes and such do actually fit that size natively. Strange and quite annoying, but since it is an old quality maker, this kind of design must have had a use.
