Keeping the diary wasn't a great idea, but you're right the real problem was more so Jamal and his parents. To unceremoniously end a 6 year marriage over a diary. And to support your son in such an immature and catastrophic decision. What kind of parents would support something like that? It's not like Umber/Amber was having an affair. So she occasionally, yet PRIVATELY remarked on the difference between the two men she loved??? Is that really grounds for divorce? It would be one thing if Umber was constantly mentioning Asjad to Jamal or making him feel that she was comparing them or longing for Asjad, but Jamal violated her privacy and read her journal. Meanwhile she hadn't seen or spoke to Asjad in five years. I'm not even sure she knew he was married. And they had no chance of running into each other with Asjad in Pakistan and Umber with Jamal in Qatar. I just can't think of a more preposterous reason or way to end a marriage, especially when he knew she was engaged to someone else for 10 years. How could he be surprised to learn she had, in those 10 years, fallen in love with Asjad? And why should Jamal be offended that she was willing to abandon the things she liked, for the things he liked? She liked to wear her hair down. Jamal liked it up. So she wore it up according to his preference. If it didn't bother her enough to say anything, why is he bothered? Umber's willingness to do the things he likes that should counted as proof of her loyalty to him and their marriage despite the circumstances.
