DENJIRO: A fire can break out due to oil. Let's heat up this oil using a gas burner. It doesn't catch fire immediately. Heating it up for a bit won't warm up the oil enough, so it doesn't catch fire. Let's continue to heat it. Now, it caught fire. That's because the oil heated up enough to vaporize. Once it catches fire, the flames heat up the oil even more, causing it to burn more fiercely.
Now, what happens when we add water to this? The flame became even bigger. Why did this happen?
I have here a beaker filled with oil that's on fire. We'll drip some dyed water into it and look at what happens with a slow-motion camera.
Once the water hits the hot oil, it immediately boils and causes the oil to splatter, which makes the fire even bigger.
Next, let's see what happens when we add oil. The famous saying "Add fuel to the fire" means doing something to make a bad situation even worse. But what actually happens when we do just that? The fire went out! Three things are needed for something to burn up: temperature, the object that burns, and oxygen. If any of these three components is missing, a flame cannot keep burning. When we added room-temperature oil to the burning oil, the temperature dropped. That's why we were able to put the fire out.
In case of an actual fire caused by oil, a fire extinguisher is the best solution. There are specialized extinguishers for oil fires, so use that to safely put out a fire.
