I highly recommend casting about 10 degrees upstream pointing the rod tip at the spoon then reeling barely faster than the current, this allows the spoon to fish deeper and slower than just swinging it, also you can cover the water faster and with more control because you are taking shorter casts and you'll feel strikes better as your rod isn't loaded up against the current on the spoon. just my opinion.

great video. guide select pro casting rod changed my life, thanks guys. such an incredible spoon rod paired with a low profile bait caster. I have caught 90% of my steelhead on spoons. it takes a long time to learn how to "feel" the spoon and to get it down to the fish but I think spoons can compete with bait if you can cover enough water. best spoons are rnb, pentac imo pline and lil cleos are chintzy in comparison. spoons seem to trigger the instinct of fish being territorial of their holding water, choice rocks, gravel or slots. you can drift fish spoons and spinners by mending your line and holding your rod high and keeping as much line off the water as possible- dont do this in snaggy water or you will be donating a lot of $$$ to the river.

Before they closed I would fish in the upper Columbia Tribs where barbless is the name of the game. In order to keep torque off of the hook while fighting fish I would put an extra barrel swivel on the bottom of the spoon before I put the hook on. If a fish decides to gator roll the spoon rolls with the fish and the hook stays in place.
@michaeltrotter79714 жыл бұрын
Ever try that with a spinner? Im going to hit the icicle this week
@Godlobber4 жыл бұрын
@@michaeltrotter7971, yes but I take it one step further and use a barrel swivel to a split ring with a blade on it to a Fish Field Tornado Chain Swivel to a Saiwash hook. The chain swivel helps clear the hook from the spinner blade, in my opinion, a better hook set.

We Are looking for some help, we are headed back up to yakutat for the coho season. In the beginning of your video you mention one of the hooks to be a mustard 2/0 sidestep open eyed. When your spoon comes to the end of the swim do you reel it back real fast because there was no chance to catch the fish at this point? no. the top swivel is to promote action and control line twist. the hook swivel rotates in mouth of fish making it much harder for it to come unpinned and better hooksets

I have been fishing with spoons and daredevils for many years. I use the low cast skipping technique, like skipping a flat stone acros the top water. At waist level, swing, release the line, and one, two, three, boom! Fish on! Black and White spoons kick more ass. Red and white, silver and green, or any shinny colors, take no skill at all to catch any fish in that pond, or river. It looks like a shinner/shad and fish, especialy Bass, have no restraint when they see it. Hit those waters in the early morning.
