We are so lucky on lake michigan! No sea lions. No checking for clipped fins. And a 5 fish limit with no closed season. Also with the alewives coming back the size is getting back to the heyday of the 80s.

I think that when fish have cuts on the side, it could come from being hooked on the side. They fight so hard to get away, they literally rip a hole in the skins to get away.
