The biggest fish in North America live in some of the biggest river systems the Western United States & Canada have to offer! These monster fish lay in deep pools of rivers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, & Canada. White sturgeon are native to several large North American rivers that drain to the Pacific Ocean. They primarily live in estuaries of large rivers, but migrate to spawn in freshwater. In this episode, Part 3 of Idaho steel we spend a little bit of the morning catching trout and steelhead before beginning our search for the great white sturgeon. Our goal was to catch a hatchery trout to use for bait, then search from pool to pool looking for a true giant white sturgeon. Thanks for watching everyone, be sure to check out episode 1 and 2 below!!

Barely any Steelhead is under 30 inches this Northwest run. You think they are going to run off to Lake Michigan?
@conormccall923
@conormccall923 3 жыл бұрын
Nate Deleon Nothing is wrong. I just find it funny that they would run off to Lake Michigan if there are massive Steelhead in Hells canyon and the Columbia River. They probably wouldn’t drive to Michigan and probably wouldn’t get in a plane due to this virus going around. A 37 inch Steelhead isn’t much above average size for this run. Everyone I’ve seen catch a Steelhead it’s been at least 32 inches. Someone hooked into a near 40 incher in my local River.

My personal opinion on this series is I love it. It's informative I love the local fishing information. If you get sick of catching all the rainbows you can go to Riggins, Idaho. Barely any trout are in the river and the only trout I've caught are bulls. In the summer it's loaded with bass so the trout have a difficult time living the warm water.

Rofl most bountiful place on earth! Remind me, what exactly did washington and oregon do to their salmon populations again? Steelhead populations are just starting to creep up over all, but I wouldn't bank on that with the proximity of those BC salmon farms in relation to your area runs. Remind me of how healthy the deer population is in Oregon as well. Last time I was down there hunting on my grandparents orchard, they were telling us to not take them as there was a disease going through at the time. Healthy elk, but sick deer. Now, I'm just some stupid Alaskan hunter/gatherer, pulled a few gallons of blueberries, roughly 15lbs fresh black morels, 29 coho, a handful of whitefish, and a handful of Sheefish, not to mention the intermittent foraging for lingonberries, lambs quarter, wild onions, spruce tips, porcini mushrooms, I could go on... My point being, the bounty gets better the farther north you go TBH. At least in regards to a more easily available bountiful harvest... Go further north

What a great way to close out this Idaho series boys! Sad to see it come to an end. Watching those sturgeon nibble at the bait reminds me of when I first started sturgeon fishing. I would always jump up and grab the rod then they would stop. I would set it back down and they would nibble again. About enough to drive you crazy. Now I just sit and wait for them to hook themselves. Keep the great content coming!!! Tight lines!

So what's the difference between a rainbow and a steelhead? Your just calling it a trout instead of steelhead because it's small? I'm confused
@fishstopbc8662
@fishstopbc8662 3 жыл бұрын
Steelhead are just rainbows that head out to the ocean and feed for a few years and then come back to the rivers to spawn. When they’re baby’s they haven’t gone out to the ocean yet so they are called rainbows
@aleenaard2319
@aleenaard2319 3 жыл бұрын
So I'm daughter of Cody Ard the big guy in this video but rainbows live in rivers then they travel to the ocean for 2-4 years and they come over 22 inches and bigger they come back where they were born just like salmon so a rainbow trout is a baby steelhead pretty much.
@codyard4479
@codyard4479 3 жыл бұрын
@@aleenaard2319 you're very close. Apparently you DO listen haha. ALL these rainbow trout we're catching ARE hatchery steelhead planted by Idaho Power and Idaho Fish and Game. Only a certain percentage leave this area headed for the ocean where they'll spend a few years and then return to spawn. The remainder of those steelhead/trout stay and live their lives right there in Hells Canyon. They're ALL rainbow trout, but the ones who make the ocean journey and return are called steelhead

I fish for Sturgeon with circle hooks and set as hard as I can when the fish is hanging onto the bait. I use 8/0 to 12/0 Gamakatsu hooks. A Sturgeons mouth is built different than most fish so no need to wait for a self set. Next time just set on those bumps and you will hook up.

Steelhead migrate from the ocean so they are tougher and bigger. In the ocean they are well fed, stronger currents. Can go to the right depths to reach desired habitat temperature.

Hey guys awesome video!!!! Dudeee look, it’s bad for the fish to catch them using gloves. :( May sound silly but we have been facing such a hard time with fish numbers decreasing year after year and steelheads are really struggling... you guys are blessed to have so much nice fish. Take care of them. Thank you once more 👏👏👏
