In this video, I'll walk you through how to add a sconce to a brick wall including how to add the box to the brick and run the wires.

I would have used a round box and a diamond hole saw but your method with the oscillating tool is also very smart. Good job. Thanks

Good idea with the whole saw. Truthfully I've used this method so many times adding outlets in brick I guess the oscillating tool was just my default. I really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the video. I don't have any lights outside my garage, so I will be adding some soon. This was very a helpful video.

I’ve installed surface pancake boxes and most light fixtures have 1/2 play to his the box usually instead of making a huge hole

Dude added some ugly fixtures. Helpful video though!

actually , NEC .. suppose to use a box rated for lights. not a switch box. once had a electrical inspector tell me that.

Did you use a 90 degree drill bit for the top plate hole?... or drill in at an angle to reach the wall space?
@HowitsdoneHandyman Жыл бұрын
good question! I actually used my right-angle drill with a paddle bit. I wish my arms were a bit longer though LOL

I am assuming these two lights are on a 15 amp breaker? That 14 Gauge wire is a no no on a 20 amp breaker(12 gauge wire required). Most DIYer's don't know this. Thanks for the video.
@HowitsdoneHandyman Жыл бұрын
It's actually 12-3 Romex that I'm using. Since 2001 there has been a color standard in place for the common Romex sizes. White Romex is 14 Gauge, the yellow Romex(as seen here) is 12 Gauge, and the orange Romex is 10 Gauge. But yes it is a 15 amp circuit and the wire the builder ran to the existing fixtures is 14 gauge. Thanks for the comment and the opportunity to clarify.

Thanks for the video, I’m gonna install two lights. Can you tell me what is the name of the disk you used to cut the brick ?

I used a Swing blade with Diamond grit for my Oscillating tool. alternatively, @fiouable had the great recommendation of using a diamond grit hole saw and a round box. this would be my recommendation if you don't already have an oscillating tool. www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWA4241-Diamond-Swing-Oscillating/dp/B01GLGFVJQ/ref=asc_df_B01GLGFVJQ?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80676721523958&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584276296743549&psc=1

VERY STRONGLY recommend wearing a mask when you’re cutting masonry. That dust is horrible for your lungs.

It would have been great to see the remainder of the wiring portion. Did you just wire it to the other light directly?
@HowitsdoneHandyman10 ай бұрын
Pretty much, I intercepted the wire for the other light in the attic and made a J-Box with a single gang plastic box and blank plate.

HOw did you secure the box to the existing brick? With "liquid nail"? Mortor?
@HowitsdoneHandyman Жыл бұрын
I used liquid nail, mortor in my experience doesn't adhere to the plastic box as well.

Nice
@staceysims7270 Жыл бұрын
Is liquid nail the only thing securing the blue box to the brick, or did you secure it with screws through the bracket to the brick ?
@HowitsdoneHandyman Жыл бұрын
While the liquid nail was setting up I drilled through the box diagonally to screw it to the brick internally.

@@HowitsdoneHandyman you used wedge anchors on both sides ?

Where did you buy the lights?
@HowitsdoneHandyman Жыл бұрын
There are a couple different places you can order them from but at the time the best price I found was at Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L512HB5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

what about water issues?? not water tight
@HowitsdoneHandyman11 ай бұрын
That's a good question, the fixture I'm using is actually considered raintight/weatherproof. Generally, exterior lights are not required to be watertight. One example where you would want watertight fixtures would be a beachfront property. It's always best practice to check your local building codes.
@randyk448210 ай бұрын
Really don’t like plastic boxes used exterior. Just had my outdoor light literally fall off the house because the plastic had become brittle in the Texas heat. Yup, lasted 20 years but still.
@HowitsdoneHandyman10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I hear you on that one, honestly, I've seen that a lot in the Texas heat. The trade-off is after 20 years the screws in metal boxes get pretty rusted in place.

Why didn't you just drill a 5/8" thru the brick, then string your wiring thru the hole, put your box on the inside of the garage? Mount the light fixture with Tapcon screws.
@jjparks92632 ай бұрын
you need a junction box on every light fixture per code even though he used the worng one
@davidnee61572 ай бұрын
@@jjparks9263 I only drill a hole in the my brick, put the box in the drywall as you would any other box, sealed up the outside with some silicone.
