Found out the T7 has a cropped sensor then this, internal mic only arrrggh... Lol, but just got a 10-18mm lens along with 3 others that allow me to cover 10mm to 300mm and with a crop factor of 1.6 it's essentially 16mm to 480, the 16 to 18 compensates for the crop factor and doesn't do to bad as a macro as well, now for the audio, I'll bump up the the frequencies in video editing software, I'm in no way taking it apart lol... Glad it worked out for you.

Heckin’ yeah man, you freaking rock!!!! Found out myself the 2.5 mm jack is for an external trigger button 😂😂😂 I bought a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm adapter and was initially flummoxed by the camera rapidly taking shots as soon as I powered it on. Thanks so much for documenting this 👍👍👍👍 It took me about an hour, most of which was on the soldering. I ended up using some short lengths of thin earphone wire between the OEM socket and my repurposed adaptor plus hot glue (shit is delicate!). Seriously owe you a 6-pack sometime 🙏

You must be very careful with Canon cameras 9 times out of ten they don't have external mics input unless you pay thousands of $$$ for a stupid camera. Canon among many others are extremely greedy and ruthless, I made a decision I will never again buy these cameras, I have owned three, and all three lacked mics. Nikon is my answer to these greedy leeches at Canon and Sony, Fuji etc... Anything under $1500 comes with no external audio input.

What I do to keep track of the screws, is I find a pic of the cam on line (google search with the model number, then hit the images key). Then I print out a b&w pic an I tape the screws on the printout.

Yeah, it is very disappointing they provide no way to accomplish this short of a risky hack. It is very hard to find an absolute answer to whether it is supported ahead of time as well. If I was you, I'd return it and spend the extra cash. The main reason I hacked mine instead is because I would not have any use for the swivel screen, but if you have that possibility it is probably worth just getting the more expensive T7i model.

Either a cheap voice recorder mounted with a mic or a decent portable voice recorder would do the trick.....Hollywood doesn't even record sound and video on the same track, they record sound and video separate and put them together in post. I too purchased the t7 assuming it would allow for an external mic, surprisingly the t7 records some decent sound. Great video none the less. ✌🏾 from Alaska

907Ronald I just Record audio on my H1N and match it to the Audio coming from the T7 easier that way! If I were more gutsy I’d attempt this but I literally just got my Rebel T7 😳

Ill just use my phone untill I can afford a mid/high level priced one that has zero lag and many functions/features until then you can't beat a 9 dollar app and the crisp and smooth footage attained is pretty remarkable. ✌🏾

Also you can get a monitor to attach to the top via USB, now you have a swivel screen for focus, and they have the 3.5 audio Jack on the monitor.

I think for those set ups you go into camera settings and turn off internal mic and external monitor mic would work on the monitor. I'll have to try it. I saw a video on KZbin explaining it

Some idiot online also said this camera can output a clean HDMI signal. Turns out that isn't true either. Didn't find that out until after I already bought a cable and capture card. Same with the mic.

I'm probably going to give this a shot with my Fuji. I love the camera, but the internal mics constantly picks up motor noise from the lens. I have run external sound before, and it ended being a huge hassle. After synchronizing the audio, I found out that it was out of sync by the end of the clip. I turned out that my audio recorder had clock drift, so I had to to rescale the audio to compensate. I'd rather just have it properly embedded into the video file in the first place!

No idea... the really annoying part is since the manufacturer didn't bother to specify, you have to rely on 3rd party anecdotal claims, which are conflicting. If you can, I'd suggest sending it back and buying the next step up.

Thanks for the insight, brother. I've tried to add an external monitor, too, and the eos software from the hdmi won't do live recording on the T7 Rebel. When I got this camera I was told it's a great camera for recording. But it only records for around 12 minutes, before automatically cutting off. I was never told that. After what you did the audio sounds great, brother. I'm in North Carolina myself. Now I'm thinking about getting another camera because I always record, and I love the way the T7 looks, but it's not made for what I do. Any suggestions on a great camera for recording longer videos at a not so crazy cost that has external monitor connection for live recording and for external mic connection? Its a remote port. Canon makes a wired remote for this camera. Adding a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter wont work as the port isnt wired for audio.

The Canon Rebel T7 supports no external mics. The T7i does. With this hack it supports any mic that is mono and requires no external power supply. You might be able to get a self powered mic (with its own external supply) or perhaps use one of the usb ports to power it... still it is only a mono input. Hope that helps.

Sorry, I'm not sure what hole you're referring to; however, there is probably a hole for the mic to "hear" through. There is no audio input jack on this camera, and no support for a USB audio input either.

How old is the video? I'm wondering. Some mics have 3 and some have 4 contact points. Which did you use? I discovered with my cellphone that a mic would not work unless I had 4 contact points. Did you try another combination?

There are only 2 wires in this camera for the mic, you cannot make it stereo or arena, etc. It is incapable of anything other than mono (without major changes to the electronics/firmware). The date of the video is about the date of the footage: Jul 12 2019.

@@truckerdaddy-akajohninqueb4793 that is up to you. I used what I had laying around, which was 3.5mm if I recall correctly. You'll want to use the size that matches the mic input you're using for the camera. So if you have a 2.5mm input for your mic, then use that size.

The mic input only has 1 channel, so stereo is not possible in the recording for audio.

I think ground is connected to sleeve in a TS connector and same in a TRS which he uses here (and signal will pass thru the tip, and also tip and ring in trs). Easy to check the connection when the connector is male, definitely more complicated with a female connection. I would probably plug a male (dummy) cable into the female connector and check that way, is that makes any sense at all haha good luck!

@@someoneinncarolina probably didn't short cuz it's mono and that other audio wire not getting pwr but I am an audio guy like you said you weren't and as I said before those two insulated colored wires are positive one left and one right. You may have got lucky and got the right one had it been stereo that other side would definitely be shorted but glad it worked out.

Probably need JIS pattern jewelers screwdrivers on Japanese products, standard Phillips don't fit properly. Protect innards from dropped bits of molten solder, etc. I wouldn't attempt this on a valuable camera.

@@someoneinncarolina I'm back, and I got the camera haha. I've had it for 1 month and I'm LOVING it. Not loving the weather though, as there have been only 2 clear nights in the past 33 days.. but when I was able to try it on the night sky I was blown away! Never been able to capture pictures like that before. The core of the milky way is on the southern hemisphere at night until spring/summer, but I was able to photograph thousands of stars that aren't visible to the eye, as well as the Orion nebula! Not much detail in it though as all I have is the basic 18-55mm kit lens, I'm so excited for a 55-250mm lens. After that I'll think about getting a star tracker, those can be pretty expensive and aren't totally necessary for me just yet so I'll definitely wait.. so for anyone else wondering, it's great for astrophotography!
