I have the same one and my dogs love it. I have it pointed at the entrance to my dog house and it makes all four small dogs to go inside the house and sleep like babies… and they seem very comfortable and happy… it’s 107 here in Texas.

I'm in Arizona too, GOlden VAlley. IT is May and is about 98 degrees outside. I got a big one cover 950 sqft and my temperature went down by 15 degrees within a couple of hours. I started at 3Pm garage was at 95, it is now 5:45 it's at 82. So that's quite a bit. I have closed all the windows except one to keep circulation going for dry and humid air. My machine is on low and same brand but just a bigger unit.

I found my full tank only lasted about 1 to 1 1/2 hours Brenda. I was always checking it and adding more water before it got too low. Your time may vary from what I had. Just keep checking it. Hope that helps somewhat.

Having the garage door open like you do, it would be difficult for any until to cool any room since heat is entering from 90% of the door opening. So if you are going to have the garage door open, I suggest installing a small portable wall under the door to the floor. Block off the entire opening other than two small opening for air intake and the other for exhaust. One opening for the air intake to the cooler. The other to exhaust the air to the outside. You must use 100% outside air for your unit’s air intake. Using indoor air and recirculating through the unit defeats the entire process. However, if you have a window in the garage, use that as your exhaust and only have one opening in the partition. As it stands now, you’ll never bring down the temperature much since hot air is entering from the same door opening you are conditioning the air. Also, in order for evaporative AC to be effective , there needs to be an air change in the room or home every two minutes. So, assuming the following and keeping the math simple: 40O sqft area x 10’ ceiling= 4000 cuft Air change every 2 minutes = 4000 cuft / 2 minutes = 2000 cfm cooling capacity. As it now stands, the evaporative cooler should have at least a 2000 cfm blower capacity. I don’t think the unit you have comes close to that figure and is undersized. The method I provide here is the standard way of calculation evaporative air condition sizing. Some will use an air change every 2.5 minutes as opposed to the 2 minutes I used. If 2.5 minutes used, a 1600 cfm unit could be utilized. Even at this size, your unit is still too small. Also, as humidity rises, the evaporative AC becomes less effective. With 110 degree outside air and 10% humidity, you can probably achieve an 80 degree indoor temp. As humidity rises to 25-35%, your indoor air temps will range from 85-93 degrees.

@@JayVisnansky You’re welcome. Just remember evaporative cooling works by moving very large quantities of air to achieve the cooling effect. Some folks will use evaporative cooling with refrigerated AC at the same time. Big mistake. Refrigerated air removes moisture from air, where evaporative AC add moisture. It will be the removal of latent heat from the water vapor that will drive up energy use in the home if both types used at same time. Use one or the other, but not both at the same time. Remember to keep a window open on the other end of the room or house when using evaporative AC.

In one house I had with both evap and AC, I had upducts in each room of the house. I didn’t have to have any windows opened. Those worked out real nice.

@@JayVisnansky upducts function the same way an open window does, except air is blown into the attic space reducing the temps there for evaporative cooling only. Don’t use with refrigerated AC. You’ll end up using much more energy. Refrigerated AC depends on recycling conditioned air to be recycled through the coils to maintain temperature. However, a little outside air is required for air quality purposes due to CO2, off gassing from VOCs, radon, etc. But not to the levels upducts provide.

As others have mentioned, for best results, just crack the garage door open 3-4 inches only. In addition, crack the side door or window, if you have one in the garage. This will promote a flow through current which will help carry the hot air out. I place my larger evap cooler next to the side door which is about half way into the garage and I point it at the rear of the garage. This creates a current of cool air toward the back of the garage and forces that hot air back toward the front where it can escape out the top of the garage door.

@@marathonbaker The biggest factor is the humidity at the air intake (cooling power) and the room (comfort/health). The difference between 30% and 60% humidity is ~ 10F in the water temperature. You need to adjust the windows' opennings to keep the humidity down. Preferably, place the cooler near one of the windows. If your area is really dry, try using 2 coolers ( one in the bedroom and the other in the living room ). The big coolers may be too loud for you in the bedroom ( 2 smaller coolers may be better ). Big cooler noise is usually in the less annoying lower frequencies ( maybe not for you).

Have the back door screen open where the cooler is, and large window about 30ft in front wide open. Still was showing 66% humidity so I just shut the pump off and see if the fan will balance the temperature. Not really hot yet, tomorrow is suppose to be in the 90s

@@marathonbaker External wind direction/speed can have a huge impact. Your indoor humiiidity is high ( impact comfort/effectiveness). What is the outside humidity? How much bigger is the window openning (outlet) compare to the door openning (inlet)? You want the outlet openning to be 30-50% bigger. To encourage airflow, place a fan a few feet from the window to push air out ( don't place the fan on the window like an exhaust fan - pushing the air out is much more effective).

I did find the 6” gap works just fine for the garage door opening Smokin’ Joe’s. But I do NOT have the attic crawl space door open. It’s closed with just the garage door open that 6”. My attic is hot, just like everyone’s, and I just blew in a lot of insulation up there and so I just keep it closed. But the evap seems to do ok when I’m in a 10 foot area of it. You can first fill the tray with water JPR and then run the cooler. You’ll see how fast the water is used. Then based on that used, you’d connect the hose and then set the drip rate of the hose based on the first step I mentioned. At least that’s how I did it. Hope the makes sense.

Your garage door is open to much and you should move it away from the garage door, it's pulling in hot air from outside and trying to cool hot outside air. Move it to the opposite side of garage. You'll see a huge difference.

@@MrBod4life There is no auto shut off Brent. There’s a water view in front of the unit and I’m always checking that while it’s running. I haven’t taken the time yet to hook up a hose to the unit. With that, the chance of running out of water goes away.

It's not a sham, it's science. If it's really humid in Utah, then the evaporative cooler, meaning it puts humidity in the air, isn't going be able to add any additional humidity in. That's the principle on which these evaporative coolers work. Now if some place sold you one saying it was going to change your life in Utah, well, I'd wager THEY are the sham for knowing how they work and just trying to make a buck off you. In very hot, low humidity areas, these work very well. If it's normally dry in Utah, but happens to be a humid time, then these ALSO will not work; high humidity makes these useless. It's just the way they operate. Of course, you also need to keep a door or window slightly ajar and open one on another side of the room if possible to keep a current of air flowing through which helps the evaporative cooler do it's job and make you comfortable. Looking at the average humidity from 1961 to 1990 for Utah, July is the lowest with 36%, and most every other month is over 40% which makes an evaporative cooler of little effect as you found out.

Once you get into the 20-35% humidity ranges, the room temperature will rise and the air really muggy 85-92 degrees. And the air becomes very muggy.

Jerry if you want your door close and window close try putting a Up-Dux in the bedroom ceiling that will be your door worked for me so far have a swamp cooler put a up-dux in my living room
