The original iteration of this model was in Caledonian livery and had tank side handrails and the rails at the back of the cab. To simplify the model (already pretty simple even by 1980s standards) to make the low cost entry level cheeky chappy Smoky Joe we all know and loved to fire off the corners of our first trainset at full speed they removed the handrails from the tooling and that’s how it remains today.

It's shaping up great so far! It goes to show what you can do with a limited budget to make a reasonably convincing and well running locomotive. I think the only things you have missed is the lamp iron brackets on either side of the cab near the roof (that's what the lumps are supposed to represent, and would likely have been removed as soon as it arrived in Swindon), and cleaning up some of the moulding lines. Personally I would have gone a little further for "Swindonification", opting for the handrail posts on the tanks and above the smokebox door, replacing the pair of Ross pop safety valves and dome with a full brass bonnet or a variation thereof, and disposing of the CR hooter whistle for a pair of GWR ones that you can prize off a junked 2721 or 1400. Can't wait for the next instalment

This shows that you can have a lot of fun on a small budget, and have something unique on your layout. Love your work, did the same thing with a few of those, in the past. And if this is your first go at trying to alter or improving loco's that's the way to start. Of corse it's also worth while thinking in investing in good tools, and if you have the right tool for the right job, it also in the end engrave your work.

RE: the "handy locating holes" in the tooling if memory serves me correctly the original models when first produced did have something to look like the supports, but i can't remember if it was similarly done to how you have done it or whether it was a single piece going around the underneath of the roof piece, if you look up "desmond" on the collectors guide it shows them attatched i'm unsure when they were taken away, but it does seem to be around the 1983 point, but i could be wrong

Any plans for disguising the clips which hold the body in place?

Lively model but why didnt you clean the mould line up the chimney?

Good idea, I'll see if I can do that when it comes to repainting.

I do love a detailed up Caley pug, if it was me doing it I'd add a cosmetic coupling hook to the front bufferbeam and some lamp irons but I wouldn't do it if they're too fiddly for you
