We've already created a video about how to import materials, so we're going to take it up a notch. In this video, we'll cover how you create a new material that you can reference within SketchUp for all of your projects.

Thanks Aaron, Having watched it I realised that if I import a texture from the File menu it obviously shows up in the 'in model' materials group and I could then drag it into another group to have it available every time i start Sketchup. This is really useful for me as I hadn't realised this until watching this video and have often imported the same material into several models instead of having it already there on starting Sketchup.

I've been using Sketchup a while and didn't realize you could add to existing texture palettes. I would copy and paste textures I liked from other models or create new ones every time and pick the image texture. This will save a lot of time. Thank you

Hi Aaron, cleaning up the model, window / model info / statistics / purge unused, in my opinion it is just as important how to create a new material, it could save a lot of diskspace ;-)

Thanks, maybe not the purpose of the video, but I came with the way to copy textures in Mac… huge time saver

Great Job Aaron, have forced my way thru that but it wasn't that easy. Thanks for the Headsup..

This was probably something I learned many years ago and forgot so been doing it the hard way. Part 3 of this series could be how to use cloud storage for favorites so when you update the application, change machines, or use multiple computers you still have access to your material libraries.

I second this request. I have never figured out a way to save my materials to bring to a new version of the software

Before thinking of buying a smartphone, you have to decide whether you want to understand it in order to use it..., otherwise stick with... Nokia 5210. The same thing with PC's, you want to use Chrome, or AutoCAD, or Excel, or... whatever, but you don't know the basic things about using and managing your File Explorer, cloud storages, (at least) a few device manager and OS settings... - for me that is too sad. The same attitude we have in general in life, towards everything, even towards parenting, and marriage...

Thanks Aaron! If you are trying to create a new folder for materials, Is it any different if you add to the material list simply by clicking "list" in the textures dropdown menu, and typing in a name, as opposed to going through the Library, on a Mac? Will it still be saved?

Thanks Aaron, I just wanted to know, is there any default option toconvert complex geometry in model to low poly model in viewport so that I can work without any lag ?
@rashidahmad5382 жыл бұрын
You may uncheck profiles in styles option and also the shadows, it really helps. But to avoid lag it is necessary to use low poly models in the first place. Hope it helps...

Hi Eron.thanks for the info its a big help reqlly 😊🙌 Can you discuss about how to apply PBR materials? And how to know all the elements inside a PBR.I am quite confuse onthis area 😪 PLEASEeeeeee..... 🙏🙏🙏
@AaronMakingStuff3 жыл бұрын
Alas, as SketchUp is a 3D modeling software and not a renderer, it side not use any bump-map information. You cannot import PBR because SketchUp cannot do anything with them.

If you add a large number of materials or textures to the library are they loaded into memory each time you start SU and if yes then can that impact performance? For instance if I brought in 2 dozen high-res images of various brick or stone textures and then another dozen roofing textures are all those images loaded into memory or is each texture saved as a file and accessed by SU as needed.

I haven't had any success simply adding materials to the folder from 'outside' SketchUp. It seems like you need to add each material one at a time using the "new texture" method. Seems a bit odd, but oh well.

I have an annual subscription to Sketchup Pro so I don't have this material folder in my library. So everytime I update Sketchup (now to 2024) I have to add my materials one by one again. Is there a better way?

Greetings I have followed the directions given in this video and can not get the textures to come up the folder is empty within the drawing or model itself. I use Windows file explorer and the folders all have bmp images inside of each. I then tried a drag and drop into the SketchUp materials folder directly. IE SketchUp 2022/Materials/Wood and the files show up in windows Explorer but not in the Sketchup program. The Wood images in SketchUp that came with the App or listed under properties as .skm the imported folders and the dropped texture/ materials are listed as .bmp anyone know how to correct ? Edit ; I am using Sketchup Pro 2022 for woodworking and furniture design thanks. I am not a beginner perhaps a novice as last time I used SketchUp was in 2008 so I am relearning many things and many new functions also.
