Welcome to Chickenlandia

Күн бұрын

Join me, The President of Chickenlandia, as I integrate some tiny rescue chickens into my mixed flock of standards and bantams! Watch as I show you in easy to follow steps exactly how to deal with the pecking order and gently help everyone to get along. There's even another rescue chicken that joins us toward the end! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #integratingchickens
*Dealing with the Pecking Order*: It's so hard to watch chickens work out the pecking order, but it's a necessary part of the nature of the flock. During integration, I recommend checking on your new birds several times during the day to make sure they aren't getting pecked to the point of drawing blood. If bleeding occurs, you need to immediately separate the new bird, care for their wounds, and start the integration process over. Every flock is different but in most cases, everyone will eventually get along.
*QUARANTINING NEW BIRDS*: Every flock carries different pathogens and sometimes new birds can make existing flocks sick. To properly integrate new birds into your flock, it's best to keep them in a completely separate area with no chance of cross-contamination for two to four weeks. Clean shoes with a diluted bleach spray or cover them with disposable plastic bags when moving between your existing flock and the quarantined area. Treat new birds for external and internal parasites as a precaution. If you have addition questions, feel free to contact me through the following links:

Welcome to Chickenlandia We used that method also and at night they would roost together in the coop. When we introduced them we had a completely new area that we put them all in so the old girls weren’t feeling like that needed to defend their turf/run. The new area and treats worked very well.

Bantams are awesome! Just remember that in general they go broody (want to hatch chicks out) much more often than standard sized chickens, and when they are broody they do not lay. They also lay less. But their eggs are yummy and they are super cute!!! Twice the fun in less space!

So glad I found this video! I have two bantam baby chicks. I have a flock of 8 standard chickens. Worried about how to integrate them when the chicks are older. Do you think only having 2 bantams is too few for them to be happy? TSC only had the two left and let me have them. Now I feel like they’ll get lonely.

I'm mainly interested in bantam leghorns. With the chick of a normal-sized chicken you can tell if it's female by looking at the ends of its wings when it's very young. I then heard that this method can't be used for bantam chicks. Is that true? Can their poop be picked up with a cat-litter scoop?

I dig your video! I have three large fowl ladies, they're 9 month old pullets, we just added four bantams and one LF Polish (now 13 weeks old) right next to their coop (see-but-no-touch), and now finally, after a month in sight of each other, we're starting to attempt letting them free range together to get them integrated a bit before we move them ALL to the new HUGE coop and run we're building! The coop is done, run in progress but will be done soon! Free range integration is not going TOO bad, but one of the older pullets is a bully and chases around the little girls non-stop, even in a wide open field! Any tips you can give me? Any advice is welcome!
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, David! Thank you for your question. It sounds like you are doing everything right. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless they are drawing blood and/or keeping the little ones from food and water. Make sure you put food and water in a few different places to help. If it gets really bad, start the integration process over again. Or, you could separate the bully hen for a few days, which should take her down a notch. Keep me updated!

@@WelcometoChickenlandia Gotcha, tomorrow I'll give your tips a try! If Charlotte the Barred Rock keeps being a Mean Girl, I'll isolate her, and let the other two run around with the new chickers! I thought I should mention, one of the bantams is a cockerel, dunno if that makes any difference with the integration process or not, at 13 weeks he still acts more like a chick than a hormone infused male, still hasn't even crowed yet lol. Thanks for your reply!

@@WelcometoChickenlandia He's a tiny little Black tailed Buff Japanese Bantam, he's the same size as our tiny Old English Game Bantam girl, he's adorable! So far he hasn't acted very rooster-like besides his little challenges with the girls he is with right now, every now and then he'll flare his neck feathers and do a little chest bumping dance with some of them, lol, it's too cute, he usually backs off. We once had a GIGANTIC Rhode Island Red with the older pullets, but he became too "lovingly" aggressive, and too "protective" of his girls, so we gave him to someone who wanted to breed their RIRs. Hopefully little bantam boy will be a good boy for the whole flock once we get them all integrated! I love roosters, they're so pretty and funny

That’s a great idea, I would just give it at least a few days and then do it. Make sure you get out to the coop right at dawn to let them out, and watch them throughout the day to monitor how they are getting along. If there’s no blood you’re good to go! Just keep an eye on them. 😁
